Studying genetics

Studying genetics will introduce you to a fast-paced and exciting field of modern biology that explores genes and the effect they have on what makes individuals different from each other. During a genetics degree, you’ll learn about how genes can impact human life events like development, growth and ageing, as well as gain an understanding of areas such as disease, DNA, pharmaceutical development and evolution. You’ll develop scientific knowledge and analytical skills through learning theory and using specialist research facilities, like DNA analytical equipment and computer-based image analysers. You’re also likely to get practical experience during the course through designing experiments and planning work programmes, as well as possibly having the chance to do a work placement. Possible careers for genetics graduates can be found in areas like scientific research, teaching and lab work.
