Going on open days can be an exciting but daunting task. There’s loads to look at, lots to do and plenty of things to think about. To help you stay organised on the day, we’ve put together some handy checklists of things to consider, to find out or to ask so you can make sure you make the most of it. You could even put a checklist together before you book an open day (which you can do right here) to be extra prepared!

Your choice of course

  • Are you interested in a course already?
  • Are there any talks about courses you’re interested in on the open day?
  • Can you talk to students currently on the course you’re interested in?
  • Does the course cover subject areas you want to study?
  • Will you be assessed by exams or coursework?
  • Are there joint honour opportunities that you might consider?

Course resources

  • Are course resources provided free or at a cost?
  • Can course resources be accessed at the uni library?
  • Can course resources be accessed remotely?
  • Do lecturers have regular office hours where you can meet one on one?
  • Are there work placements or a placement year?

The uni campus

  • How far apart is everything you need?
  • Where would your subject buildings be in relation to the accommodation?
  • Do you have to get a bus between campuses/accommodation?
  • Do the study areas look suitable?
  • Are there quiet areas to study in?

Student life

  • What’s the Students' Union like?
  • Are there regular events at the Students’ Union?
  • What are the food prices like on campus?
  • Does the uni offer careers support/guidance?
  • Are there any student societies you’d want to join?
  • Is there a doctor and dentist near the campus?

 Accommodation

  • What accommodation options are available for first year students?
  • How much is rent?
  • How far is the city/town from the accommodation?
  • Are there laundry facilities nearby?
  • Does the accommodation have social spaces?

The local area

  • How expensive is the city?
  • Are there plenty of options for groceries?
  • What’s the nightlife like?
  • What are the transport links between the city and your hometown?
  • Are there nearby places to visit when you have a day off?

If you manage to cover this entire checklist, or even half of it, you’ll be more than prepared to make the exciting choice of which uni and course is perfect for you!
