What students say about astronomy

The best aspect for me is the location. I love being so close to Brighton and Stanmer park. There have been times where I have felt I could use with more support/ input from lecturers or tutors this term and I have felt very overwhelmed and burnt out adjusting to the new style of learning. Maybe for the first term students could receive more guidance if they feel necessary?

The best aspects of the University of Southampton is the great opportunities, e.g. societies and guest talks. I love going sailing on the Solent every other week and frequently running around the beautiful common. Similarly, new guest come to talk about their roles and how to get into their roles which is very beneficial for career development. There are no bad aspects that I have experienced so far.

Study spaces get very crowded and busy. However the facilities are always clean and nice. There is a lot of student support on offer and is advertised well. The location is very nice with loads of shops and cafes near by. Transport links are also very good.

All staff in university is eager to help you with any kind of questions or problems. At lectures teachers are really engaging and supportive. You never notice how quick time flies during lectures. Especially, before any assignments you are given every detail about it, so you are well prepared and not scared at all. Birkbeck suggests a lot of opportunities for busy social life, where you can meet lots of enthusiastic people, and opportunities for future career such as additional workshops, professional guests, etc. I love being a part of this community!

What students say about astronomy

I’ve really enjoyed my time at this university. The lecturers are supportive and approachable, and the campus has good facilities, especially for studying. There are lots of clubs and activities, which makes it easy to meet people and feel part of the uni community. The main downside is that admin can sometimes be slow and communication could be better, especially during busy times. Overall though, it’s a great place to study and I’ve had a positive experience.

It's great because you do everything when you have time. The coarse tells you how much time you will need and you fit it in around your circumstances. The OU library is available 24 hours a day so always someone to help no matter what the time. The forums always have someone up late or really early! The tutors provide excellent feedback and are quick to respond

What students say about astronomy

Durham is a beautiful city and university with great social opportunities. The traditions are very strong at this school. It feels today like how Oxford and Cambridge were twenty years ago. Sometimes administration can be a challenge, many people have difficulty in knowing how to pay tuition and the university is slow to respond to emails. Also, there are far too many international students and just students in general. The university’s expansion plans are causing a drop in the school’s national and international rankings and causing the university to be in danger of losing its character.

Great place for the atmosphere alone, the staff are all really motivated to help and make sure you get the best of your time in university, and their gender neutral facilities make it easy for me as a trans student to remain comfortable while studying here. Lectures are generally well communicated, but the campus and SU emails sometimes get defaulted to spam, making it difficult to really keep posted on what goes on in the context of social events.

Studying astronomy

Astronomy is the study of everything related to outer space and the cosmos, such as the planets, stars and galaxies. Often combined with physics, studying astronomy at uni will allow you to explore the fundamental questions about our universe. You’ll learn through theoretical knowledge, as well as by using practical facilities like observatories, planetariums, labs, telescopes and computing equipment. You’ll be taught about topics like the origins and evolution of planets and stars, the structure of galaxies and the evolution of the universe. During your degree, you may also get the chance to do a work placement or year in industry, which will provide practical experience to help increase your employability. After graduating, it’s common to go into further study by doing a master’s or PhD, or go straight into employment working towards roles like research scientist, astronomer and meteorologist.
