My favorite thing about Rave is how industry focused we are. Translating our work into the real world is discussed very often. We get talks from guests who have tons of insight and our tutors are also knowledgeable. In terms of improvement, Rave is lacking in the student life area. There are not many active societies and it can be difficult to meet people or create student lead events.

I'm an optometry student entering my third year in September 2024. The lecturers are very nice and supportive; however, the optometry students in Group C are extremely rude, disrespectful, and lack any sort of manners. Many of them speak poorly of you if you fall behind or are slow in your routine, and they refuse to collaborate despite knowing that practice is essential for skill improvement.

What students say about engineering-physics

The best aspects of my university experience have been the sense of community and the opportunities for personal and academic growth. My course is taught by passionate lecturers who make the subject feel relevant and engaging, and I’ve appreciated how approachable most staff are when I need help. There are also plenty of extracurricular activities and societies, which made it easy to meet people with similar interests. The campus facilities—like the library, study spaces, and wellbeing services—have also been a big part of what makes it a great place to study. In terms of what could be improved, there are a few key areas. Communication between departments could sometimes be clearer, especially around deadlines and timetable changes. At busy times of the year, access to study spaces can become limited, and more quiet areas or longer opening hours would make a difference. It would also help if there were more practical, hands-on learning opportunities such as placements, workshops, or industry links, as these really enhance understanding and employability. Overall, the university offers a supportive and stimulating environment, but with better organisation and more resources during peak periods, the student experience could be even stronger.

What students say about engineering-physics

Lancaster University is a great place to study because its smaller campus and city size create a strong sense of community that is often harder to find at larger UK universities. While Lancaster may be smaller than many institutions, this is actually one of its greatest strengths. The campus environment and the close-knit nature of the city foster a safe, welcoming space where genuine friendships are formed and meaningful communities develop. This sense of belonging makes it easier for students to settle in, feel supported, and engage fully with university life. Alongside this community feel, Lancaster offers a high standard of education. Lecturers are passionate and approachable, teaching is research-led, and there are valuable opportunities for academic development and independent research. The university provides a supportive environment in which students are encouraged to grow not only academically, but also professionally and personally. I have consistently felt supported throughout my studies, including during my year abroad on placement, where I remained connected to the university community despite being away. If there is one area for improvement, it would be ensuring that any changes to curricula or modules are more directly informed by student input. While it is understood that final decisions sit with the university, students should be central to discussions about module content and structure, as we are the primary recipients of the teaching. Feedback on the success, relevance, and impact of modules should play a key role in shaping academic offerings. Overall, I have had a very positive experience at Lancaster University and feel that it provides a balanced, inclusive, and supportive environment that enables students to thrive.

The campus has a nice feel to it with areas of greenery despite being in the city centre. The location is great being close to town- it’s easy to pop into town after lectures for anything I might need. I also do appreciate the small cafe that my building has, it’s great for grabbing lunch in between lectures. I do feel as though the uni is lacking in support for students- as a first year I don’t know who I can speak to about certain aspects of uni life. I do also feel as though study spaces could be updated in the Bute library (the library closest to my building) as this is where I would study more often if this happened. The main libraries are across the other side of campus and don’t make sense to go to when doing work in between lectures. Also, because of where I live and where my building for lectures is situated I rarely pass through that side of campus.

The facilities are awesome, particularly if you love getting involved in sport. The worst thing I’ve had to deal with is the room booking system for societies is occasionally frustrating, though they are in the midst of reworking it now. Very good, can highly recommend coming here.

It is good as there is a plethora of support available for all kinds of needs, however, the learning methods are very monotone and there is no atmosphere in the lessons, but this is largely down to the unenthusiasm of a lot of students. Additionally, the facilities are decent but no better than the ones at I had at college, there is just a greater quantity of them. Given that you have to pay for university but not college, you would expect there to be significantly better facilities at a university compared to a college

There should be more support for international students, the lack of staff specialized on matter regarding visas and financial support for international students makes the whole university experience feel more overwhelming and stressful.

The place is very small which is good because everything is in walking distance and you get a better sense of community while you study. The downside is that it is not as good as when I started in my first year of undergraduate, the student Union and its facilities have lost a lot of the charm that they had originally and its a shame that new students wont have as great of an experience that I had when I joined. Not only this but the town is definitely not as safe as it used to be when I first moved and that is very apparent but that isnt paticularly something that the university can fix.

Studying engineering physics

Engineering physics applies principles and techniques of physics to engineering. As an engineering physics student, you’ll learn how to produce real-world solutions to engineering problems. Your degree might cover topics such as micro and nano electronics, materials design and quantum technology. You may also be able to cover topics from other branches of engineering such as electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. Many students go on to postgraduate level study in physics or engineering after completing their degree. Common career paths for graduates of engineering physics include medical physicist, research scientist, meteorologist, product development and physics engineer.
