I am a second year student of Markting and Management. Although Newcastle University's Business School is as experienced as others, it is still recommended as it has the potential. I live in a private accommodation which is very close to the University and the Business School. Also, the St James Park can be viewed from the Business School, which just an extra plus point.

The Best Aspects Conversion Course Support: One of the strongest points is how the university facilitates students moving from non-technical backgrounds (like your undergraduate education degree) into CS. The structure of modules like CSC8021 (Computer Networks) and CSC8023 (Programming and Data) provides a solid bridge for career changers. Career & Research Opportunities: The access to prestigious opportunities, such as the Google DeepMind Research Ready programme and internal NCL internships, shows that the uni is well-connected with the industry and dedicated to student employability. Supportive Faculty: Having personal tutors and lecturers (like Rehmat Ullah, Bo Wei, or Dr. Dan Nesbitt) who are willing to provide detailed letters of recommendation and guidance is a massive plus for those looking toward PhDs or high-level internships. Campus & Facilities: Being located in the heart of Newcastle, the campus offers a great balance of modern academic buildings and proximity to city life, making it a very convenient place to live and study. The Worst Aspects Intense Pace of STEM Conversion: For students coming from a "文科" (liberal arts) background, the learning curve for Java, data structures, and algorithms can be incredibly steep. The rapid succession of exams (like your Jan 7th and 15th deadlines) can feel overwhelming without more bridge-building workshops. Administrative Hurdles: Like many large institutions, navigating the bureaucracy for things like laundry refunds or specific internship eligibility can occasionally be a bit of a headache. Need for More Applied AI Projects: While the theoretical foundation is strong, providing more "from-scratch" project guidance—similar to the deep learning MNIST project you're interested in—within the standard curriculum would better prepare students for the competitive tech job market.

The Best Aspects: A Supportive Bridge to Tech The highlight of this course is its effectiveness as a "conversion" pathway. Coming from a liberal arts and education background, I found the transition into Computer Science manageable thanks to the logical structure of modules like Programming and Data (CSC8023) and Computer Networks (CSC8021). The teaching is a high-quality blended learning model; having access to recorded materials alongside in-person sessions is vital for grasping complex Java concepts at my own pace. Furthermore, the accessibility of lecturers—such as Dr. Dan Nesbitt and Bo Wei—is exceptional. They are not just teachers but mentors who are genuinely willing to support students seeking research opportunities or PhD recommendations. The Worst Aspects: Intensity and Practical Gaps The most challenging part is the sheer intensity of the timeline. For students new to the field, the learning curve is vertical, and having major exams (like those in mid-January) immediately after the winter break creates a high-pressure environment. While the theoretical foundation is excellent, I would appreciate more step-by-step, hands-on project guidance within the core curriculum—specifically for emerging fields like Deep Learning. Sometimes, the jump from classroom theory to building a project "from scratch" feels like a gap we have to bridge entirely on our own.

The Best Aspects: Convenience and Community The greatest advantage is the location. Being just a short walk from the computer science labs is essential, especially when I have late-night coding sessions or early morning lectures. The internet speed is also a major plus; as a CS student, having a reliable and fast connection for downloading large datasets or running virtual machines is non-negotiable. I also appreciate the security and parcel management—it’s very reassuring to know my deliveries are safe while I’m in class. The Worst Aspects: Cost and Maintenance Speed The value for money can be a concern, as student accommodation in the city center is quite expensive compared to private rentals in areas like Jesmond . Additionally, the response time for minor maintenance issues (like a leaky tap or a slow drain) can be inconsistent. Sometimes, it feels like the communal spaces could be cleaned more frequently, especially during the busy exam periods when everyone is spending more time in the shared kitchens.
