I think university generally is a daunting experience at first, however my uni set up a discovery week which helped me know the building and meet new people straight away. This was personally a great thing for me as I was from sheffield and had not applied for student accommodation so I thought initially making friends would be harder however after joining some of the hundreds of societies to choose from this wasn't a problem.
As an international (OK - EU student) coming to the UK to study was an adventure in itself. Sheffield provides so many experiences in terms of a lively city and nightlife, a Students' Union that is repeatedly voted by students as being the best in the country, and clubs and societies ranging from the History Society (which I was part of!) to the Trampolining Club. The city has the highest ratio of parks/unbuilt areas per inhabitant and the Peak District is right on your doorstep. The professors on my course were consistently encouraging and taught me to address problems and global challenges with a highly critical mindset. I now work as a social researcher at the European Commission, doing something I enjoy and, I like to think, that I'm good at. This is in no small part due to Sheffield University and the support of my professors. The downsides? My hall of residence was passable but not great - and right near the Red Light District! Finally Sheffield University could do more to attract more undergraduate international students - in my course I was the only non-UK student.
Never firmed Sheffield on UCAS but ended up going here after missing my offer. What a mistake I made. I'm now transferring out because I do not believe the education they provide is not worth anywhere near the £9k fees. The course was completely terrible (LLB Law). They completely over-subscribed to the point that if everyone actually turned up to lectures there wouldn't be anywhere to sit. This makes for a very impersonal course where lecturers will never know your name and if you don't understand something you can't get any help. I would say there was around 400 undergraduate LLB Law students. Our course was so big that we were almost never in the actual law school because there wasn't a room big enough to lecture us all. The lecturers themselves differed in ability but generally I thought they were not very good for a University that is in the Russell Group. One lecturer simply typed out the textbook onto a powerpoint and read it out. After the first 2/3 weeks most people stopped going to lectures because they were just powerpoint presentations. The lecturers also upload these online so you really gain nothing by actually going to the lecture. However, this review is based on my first year lecturers; perhaps they get better in second and third year. Seminars are rubbish and normally ran by older students who are volunteering. No-one bothers going even though their compulsory. The accommodation is hit and miss depending on where your get allocated. If you get into a flat in the main Endcliffe village then the facilities are really good and almost everyone has an en-suite. However, if your more of a quiet person you would despise living here. There is music blaring every single night and it's never ever quiet.
Great city, great people, cost effective place to live, great houses/villages to live in (e.g. Crookes) and a great course.
Sheffield is a great place to study as well as be a student! It has everything in the way of nightlife as well as great facilities. And the novelty never wears off the paternoster. Fantastic and supportive staff, and everything you need is in one place.
I feel the facilities at the university of Sheffield are particularly good, with numerous buildings recently being renovated, including the Students Union. Overall its a good University, with especially good first year accommodation, and a friendly city centre.
Great atmosphere, yet to encounter a bad person. Passionate lectures who clearly have a strong understanding of their subject matter. A great union, which is only a small segment of sheffield's awesome nightlife.
Union, uni life and and the clubs and societies are amazing. Have everything we need. Job prospects are improved by the opportunities provided by the uni but I've picked a difficult subject for job opportunities.
Sheffield is a friendly, and safe environment to live in. The music department is incredibly welcoming and supportive. In my first term I've been involved in lots of extra curricular such as musical ensembles, volunteering opportunities and charity work. The student accommodation is very modern and the staff on site are fairly quick to deal with any issues. In terms of university facilities, I often find the IC is too busy to work in and I can rarely get a computer. When I do get a computer the wireless is very slow. The SU is obviously newly renovated and a great place to be. It definitely helps bring the student voice together and unite students across all years and subjects. Overall, I'm enjoying myself and would recommend Sheffield.
It's not very sunny in sheffield but the city is vibrant and there is lots to do. The union has just been refurbished and is massive.
The uni of sheffield gives an amazing student experience. The lectures are well done and there's loads of clubs and societies.
Liaison between departments for dual honors students can be a bit unreliable, so sometimes there's sever clashes. The student's union is mostly good for inclusion, though.
Love the union and think that the facilities, particularly the IC are very good. The amount of societies running is amazing. Most teachers are extremely helpful.
No specific help for job prospects for people on smaller or more niche courses. Some of the teaching is of a poor standard and particularly with language courses the people teaching don't always come off as being suited to their position.
Shef can be very smiley and helpful but you have to make sure to take initiative and go find the answers yourself - a good thing in itself as it teaches you to be independent while providing background support. Also - GET INVOLVED WITH SOCIETIES/COMMITTEES BECAUSE THEY ARE AWESOME!
Overall a very good University experience. Helpful and knowledgeable staff and the best Student's Union in the country provide a good central hub for your time at the University. The city itself is great and very student friendly, whatever your tastes are.
Overall it's very good, with a modern, thriving students union and lots of clubs and societies to get involved with. The accommodation is nice but expensive. You can choose almost all of your modules and follow whichever path you like, and there are plenty of practice rooms, but they're pretty cold in winter!
I am a second year accounting and finance student in the University of Sheffield. I am very satisfied with the overall image of the university. Its a really nice city too and the lecturers are always there to help!
generally, i m quite satisfied with what i'm provided at school everything is amazing and fully prepared.the school really based on what students' need.ranmoor, where i lived last year, is very nice built and the environment is supremely nice The only thing is about the academic side. I was like given a certain of mark in my assessments, but i would like to know how to achieve better, by providing an high mark assessments.thats the only thing

I think university life and the lifestyle is very satisfying. I am really enjoying many aspects of my university experience and one thing especially is the course. I am very happy with my current university social life here at Sheffield. The most important advice I would give to future possible students is to always make the most of the opportunities here at Sheffield and to enjoy the experience as much as possible.
