I enjoy my course, meeting my peers and my tutors
It has dropped in the view of employers
Not overly impressed, but it's still early days and it could get better. Just currently finding it rather boring with far too much free time. I would much prefer it if the 6 hours of lectures and seminars every week were just put together over one day and then I could go home for the rest of the week. It's stupidly spread out, but I guess it would be the same anywhere else. After all, at £9000 per year no one from any university would want to make a course too short.
I feel that many of the skills that I have learnt through my course have built my confidence and emplyability dramatically. Just being around the students and lecturers at the university has made me a more confident person, as everyone here is so encouraging and helpful. Over the past couple of years I've had the chance to experience the local community and surrounding landscapes, which always calm me down when deadlines are making me stressed. I've visited a couple of friends in other universities and I can safely say I made the right choice with aber, not other university would be as perfect for my interests and just me as a person
I have found my course to be challenging, but enjoy the challenge, and it has made me better with time management. The uni social life is a highlight, it gives me something to do to relax
I have had a chance to study at a few very renowned universities in Scandinavia and central Europe so far; however, non of them outdo Aberystwyth when it comes to academic facilities and teaching quality. However the rule is simple: no one will make you to study if you don't want to. If you care about your degree and the subject you're studying you will find the teaching at Aberystwyth to be excellent. You have direct contact with researchers, and you can learn directly from their experience. I have never had a lecture/workshop/practical with a person who would be there solely to teach (all my supervisor and lecturers are researchers) and this is of great value when you study more technical subject. You are surrounded by extreme care and you receive very good guidance if you just want to. Some people expect great results from exams and excellent prospects after graduations but they do nothing else that going to pubs, and then after graduation they are surprised with the outcome and bellyache about the teaching quality... Yeah you should have been wiser and spent more time studying. Obviously the university wants you to pass all the modules, but you won't obtain 1 or 2.1 class doing nothing. Honestly, if you study systematically you will appreciate the academic quality of this place, and you won't have any problem with your job prospects or applications for postgraduate positions. It's not really a problem to get into postgrad. course at Oxford with a good degree from Aberystywth (I know from experience). And the facilities are amazing - from computer rooms and libraries to labs and lecture halls. The Uni spends a lot of money to improve even more the quality of the services and all the facilities. Currently there are investments worth over 100 million pounds on the campus huge investments and developing of IBERS. You can see scaffoldings everywhere because every older building on campus is systematically refurbished (and fact some of the buildings really need it). Some accommodation is cheap and some is expensive and of course different places offer different standards, so there is nothing special about it. Teachers and staff really care about students (however sometimes the international office may be quite ungainly) and you can feel it. The town is small (obviously it's not London, Birmingham or Edinburgh, and everyone should know it, but sometimes people act like they didn't know where they were coming to study and carp about the size of the town), so if don't like small seaside towns don't come to Aberystwyth - simple right? And because of the size of the town, it is really really safe - crime is basically non-existent in Aberystwyth, and the student community is quite close-knit. Plus, because it is a Welsh town, prices of food (and goods in general) and services are significantly cheaper than in the rest of the UK. My advice: don't come hangover to every lecture, study hard and listen to what your teachers have to say, and your future carer will be all right. There is a concern regarding the recent phenomenon in table leagues, and everything that I am able to say about it is that it is probably ''political'' and has nothing to do with the real student experience (if you don't believe me come to one of the open days and ask the current students). I reckon that the uni will quite soon bounce back to it's previous position in rankings. The only REAL downside is that it takes at least 3 hours to get to any bigger city (Birmingham). All in all Aberystwyth University is excellent in terms of teaching quality and facilities, but you cannot expect miracles if you do not put any effort into your studies.
I've been here three years now and have been watching the steady decline of the teaching staff and the uni itself.
I love Aberystwyth and couldn't have chosen a better place to go to university for me. There is always something to do (even though the town is small), everyone is friendly, staff are friendly too. However, some of the facilities and accommodation a bit outdated, but nothing is really bad.
I love aberystwyth and personally cannot fault it. The town is lovely and there's tons of places to walk and enjoy beautiful landscapes. However, i understand that some of the facilities on campus could do with refurbishing, and this university is not for individuals who like bustling city life - you would be gravely disappointed!
Couldnt imagine having gone to uni anywhere else
Aberystwyth is a great university located right next to the only national library in Wales, most of the buildings are new and pleasing to the eye. There is plenty to do including sports clubs, societies and extra curricular activities that will give you the full university experience and help you to make friends. There is a wide range of courses available all of which are taught to the highest standard. There are multiple fitness opportunities available including a gym (on campus) and a wide selection of fitness classes to do at the sports center. The university is located at the top of a hill that allows you to see the sea and surrounding mountains that makes the campus so beautiful especially at sunrise and sunset.
Lovely scenic views, great community feeling, plenty of sports and societies to join and loads of pubs for drinking! I transferred to Aberystwyth from Newport Film School and love the social aspects here. You always bump into your friends and there's always something going on.
So great! A lovely location, great staff. The finance aid is amazing for those who may feel they can't afford university. The amount of support and information given throughout the year makes it hassle free.
Department of Mathematics and Physics has some very good lecturers, but overall it is run badly. Example, during exams half the sheets were missing and stapled in the wrong order. Known for under marking coursework etc.
Office staff at Aberystwyth university seem to relish an opportunity to disappoint or encumber students. Every little task becomes a monumental obstacle while they treat you with arrogant ambivalence. You are made acutely aware that you are just a wallet to them. I decided to do a semester abroad to avoid this from the university and discovered just how useless the staff are. I had a huge amount of paperwork to chew through to study abroad and the Study Abroad Office were kind enough to change all their email addresses without notifying anyone. On arrival at their office they treated me like I had a mental handicap because I was using their old details. In the end I had to do their jobs for them and complete their end of the paperwork too, literally got it finished two days before I flew out. The majority of lecturers are also content to not answer your emails, leave no comments on your essays and consistently insist that you are thick and must treat them like a deity.
Loved every moment of my time at Aberystwyth, would recommend it to anyone unless you really want to be in the middle of a massive metropolitan area. Studying in the IBERS department couldn't have been better with a lot of really dedicated staff.
Nice town, a few good lecturers, but the courses are lacking and so is the support. I haven't even had a chance to speak with my personal tutor so far this year (even though I've tried plenty), the student support don't have enough staff to actually talk to you, and honestly, with the state of the buildings I don't understand where £9000 a year is going. Accomodation is ok where I am (penbryn) though the kitchen is rubbish and we don't get any seating/tv/etc making socialising tricky. Other accomodation is hit and miss, PJM is supposed to be great while seafront and Alexandria halls are grim (and flood pretty often :/). Make sure you check reviews of the place you're staying before coming here, or you might get a nasty surprise. Night life is alright (though the 2 clubs here are a bit poo) and Aber is supposed to have more pubs per person than anywhere else in the UK (coming in at about 50). Pint costs you about £2.50 most places, less at the union. overall: some parts are ok
Aberystwyth is great for its community. The students really do own the town as they outnumber the locals, and so the town is catered for them. The tonnes of bars here have amazing deals that are normally cheap, and the competition is fierce. Every night makes a good night out and there's no shame in wandering about town in fancy dress because it's so common place. There are tonnes of popular societies and sports clubs too. The down points stem from the university having a lack of organisation. On my course especially marking can take a long time, and we're rarely informed of things until the last minute which is incredibly irritating. I tried to change tutors for my final project (because the one I ended up with sucked) and though they said it would be sorted, an entire term later he still emails me with work and my absences are stacking up, even though I'm seeing a different tutor regularly. Things like this show the lack of organisation and communication.
Aberystwyth is a very welcoming and very helpful university. Although the town doesn't have a wide selection of shops it has everything you could need. The university has been extremely helpful with the weather disturbances and has provided warnings and accommodation when needed. Along with this help they have been extremely considerate of the problems these caused and helped by moving back deadlines/ exams in order to accommodate to everyone. my general experience at Aberystwyth has been superb and highly recommend people to come here.

Really wonderful. Willing to help and work through issuses. Fun and vibrant night life without being in a city. It's grand.
