University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
Love this university. I'm down at the Cornwall Campus and it suits me perfectly. It has a Russell Group university level of teaching, in a small, friendly campus that offers much smaller teaching groups for a far more personal experience than any other University can offer. Cannot imagine being anywhere else.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
State of the art computer rooms, a large library with access to some of the best resources of any university in the UK. Everything you could want.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Many channels of support that you can go through if necessary, everyone is approachable and friendly and highly respect any requests for confidentiality.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
Regularly puts on themed events on almost every night of the week - you can never be bored.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
This is completely dependent on your own opinions - Penryn and Falmouth (a 20 minute £1 each way bus ride away) are not nightclubbing towns, and they certainly aren't cities. If you like country pubs, and some shoddy small nightclubs that play pop music and don't smell too great, with reasonably cheap drinks, this is the place for you. But don't expect an equivalent to a night out in London. Some people hate the scene here, but I and many of my friends love it.
Although it does not have a huge nightclubbing scene, there are many styles of night out available, perhaps due to the variety that the creatives at Falmouth University bring. From reggae to trance, and current pop to 70s, there's probably a place in town for you. Also the local mealplaces are excellent, and if you really can't bear the thought of not having a big night out, Truro has some really good nightclubs and is only 20 minutes away on a train.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Everything you can think of, from Zombie Society to Film Society, Harry Potter Society to Quidditch Society, Video Game Society to Snowboarding Society, and everything inbetween. If it isn't a society, you can form your own easily enough. Great open mindedness, and everyone is a member of a few societies.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
Exciting and engaging courses with lecturers that were rated in the top 4% of teaching excellence worldwide, and extremely small teaching groups for a Russell Group university - I've often had 10 people per seminar in the Penryn campus. The lecturers become friends, approachable at all times on a first name basis and they will have a chat with you on the street around town. What's not to love?
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
The university has its own great, dedicated CareerZone that regularly puts on helpful lectures, meetings and emails with prospects, and has tonnes of information online and in person (confidentially if necessary).
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
The on-campus accommodation in Penryn (called Glasney - either Glasney Park or Glasney View) is ok, but some of my friends have had some issues with their rooms at the start which have been fixed quickly by the maintenance staff - little things such as appliances not initially working. They are quite basic, but much better than some of my friends' accommodation for different universities!
I stayed at the Sidings for my first year, which is run by an external company, but university recommended. I can't recommend it enough! It's got amazing facilities with great approachable staff, it feels like living in a studio apartment with flatmates, with large TVs and leather sofas in the kitchen area, which is shared between your 5 flatmates on your floor. All facilities are excellent, especially the 24/7 security with access only available through personal key fobs. The only drawbacks are the slightly increased price and the longer walk to campus - 15 minutes up quite a large hill, but this is definitely worth it and quite easy to get used to, especially with free bicycle hire available from the Sidings. 5* for Sidings accommodation, 4* for the Glasney accommodations.
