The University of Leicester is recognised as a strong research-intensive institution with particular excellence in clinical medicine, archaeology, space science, and materials, supported by an interdisciplinary approach that encourages collaboration across fields. Its origins as a memorial to the First World War underpin a mission centred on improving lives, while its inclusive and diverse campus reflects the character of the city itself. Students benefit from relatively affordable living costs, an employability-focused curriculum, and opportunities to engage in internationally recognised research. Although not part of the Russell Group and with some infrastructure challenges, Leicester continues to rank among the top universities in the United Kingdom, offering a distinctive balance of academic quality, social mission, and accessibility.

Course rating
Course rating
One of the best aspects of my course is the high level of independence and depth of study it allows. The research-led approach means I can focus intensively on welding, materials behaviour, and finite element modelling, while still having access to excellent supervision, advanced facilities, and opportunities for collaboration with external centres such as ISIS Neutron Diffraction and the Royce Institute. Contact with my supervisors has been regular and supportive, and the school provides a good environment for interdisciplinary discussions that often enrich the perspective of my project.
The most challenging aspect is that the course demands a significant degree of self-direction, and at times access to specialised equipment has been constrained by scheduling, maintenance, or the need to travel to external facilities. This can slow experimental progress and requires careful planning. Additionally, while the workload is intellectually stimulating, balancing long hours of independent research with limited structured teaching or peer interaction can occasionally feel isolating.

University location
University location
Leicester’s location is one of its strongest assets because it is a lively, multicultural city with a strong sense of community. It is relatively affordable compared with many other UK cities, which makes student life less financially stressful, and it has good transport links to London, Birmingham, and the rest of the country. The variety of food, cultural events, and shops reflects the city’s diversity, so there is always something new to discover.
What is less appealing is that the city centre can sometimes feel crowded and noisy, and while Leicester has good everyday amenities, it lacks some of the larger cultural and professional opportunities that cities like London or Manchester can offer. For students who prefer a quieter environment with more green space, the urban setting may also feel a little overwhelming.

University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
What I like most about the university’s halls is the convenience and community atmosphere. The location makes it easy to access both the campus and the city, and the facilities such as shared kitchens and common areas encourage interaction with other students, which is especially helpful for international students settling into life in Leicester. The halls also feel generally safe and well managed.
What I like least is that some of the buildings are showing their age, and the rooms can feel quite basic compared with the rent charged. At busy times, maintenance requests may take a while to be resolved, and the communal areas are sometimes not kept as clean as they could be. Overall, the halls are a good starting point for new students, but there is room for improvement in value for money and upkeep.
