University has made me a much more confident individual. I know feel like I’m able to talk to people and discuss my ideas, where it’s in our tutor groups or even in our large lecture halls which I wouldn’t have thought possible a year ago! I feel like the university push us to our best ability, getting us prepared for placement and examinations with as much support as they can give. I’ve additionally met people on my course that will not only continue with me throughout my degree, but through my future career too.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
The university has a good amount of facilities. There’s a gym based inside the dome, which is has a reasonable annual cost for students. Additionally, there’s a range of different clubs to get involved with.
The library ion mansion site is very pretty and has a large range of subject specific books. The library closes at 12AM which is good when you have last minute deadlines!
The night life is fun on student nights, especially with the new underground student club opened on the Greenwich site.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Fortunately, we have a very good support network of tutors we can go to. These tutors are accessible by email or they are happy to see you in person at the university. Whilst on placement, there are link lectures which come are assigned to different wards, so you’re able to discuss anything you may be struggling with to a familiar face.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The University of Greenwich has a vast amount of different clubs to get involved with. It also has just expanded their student union, with a new library with an underground basement club, they additionally have outside silent discos in summer. There’s normally always someone to talk to based right in the university for any queries about the student union. I’m based at the Avery Hill campus, which has improved the dome setting, with ping pong and pool tables to use free of charge all day.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
At the Avery Hill Campus, we are based in a quiet part of London. However, there is a massive park right next door, which is good if you’re interested in fitness. Eltham has a couple of pubs. However, it only takes 20 minute to get into central London by train, where you have access to everything! There’s also free university buses, that take you straight to Cutty Sark, which is perfect for a chilled day out, waking up to the observatory, having a lunch out or being able to walk right by the Thames!
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There’s a variety of different clubs you can get involved with, it doesn’t have to be just for sport either, there’s a lots of different societies for each subject that you take too!
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
Sometimes, I find it difficult to process what the lectures are saying whilst at university, which is why I like how there’s a balance between watching lecture slides and also practical based work. The skills laboratorys involve mainly hands on work, learning about different techniques of bandaging, dressing, taking observations, I find being able to watch our lectures and then physically able to complete this ourselves after, it a fun and safe environment to learn in. Additionally, I like how nurses from different specialist background come in to speak to us as we get a taster of what a typical day is like as a diabetic, asthma, community specialist nurse.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
30
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
As a student nurse, half the year is spent in different hospital settings. This is a positive experience as not only do you get to experience a variety of hospital environments, but additionally, it may help you decide what path you may want to go down after you graduate. Alongside this, we are also recommended to find individual placements, such as volunteering or working abroad in another health care environment, the university are very good at helping you choose something that is suitable for you. Sometimes, it may be difficult to balance a job with placement and university work, which is why flexible work as a University representative or working bank at a hospital may be recommended.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
The university accommodation I has shared facilities, such as the bathroom and toilet. The kitchen is very spacious and also has a balcony. Fortunately, they have put us together with other student health care professionals, which is very handy whilst on placements as people are understanding of your different shift times. When I’m at university, it’s really handy as I’m so close to all my lectures.
