An amazing location, incredible facilities, and it feels as though the university really does care about the wellbeing of their students. Things at Exeter just WORK and everything that you need to thrive is free and easy to access.

For the most part, the teaching has been incredible. There is one module that has moved quite quickly, and it has felt as though some key concepts have been glossed over, but some independent study fills in the gaps.

The University of Exeter is an excellent place to study the MSc in Geographical Information Science (GIS) due to its strong academic reputation, high-quality teaching, and supportive learning environment. The course is well-structured and combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills, allowing students to gain a deep understanding of spatial data analysis, remote sensing, and geospatial technologies. The teaching staff are experienced researchers and professionals in the field of GIS, which ensures that students are exposed to current industry practices and cutting-edge research. Exeter also provides access to modern facilities, advanced GIS software, and excellent library resources, which greatly enhance the learning experience. The university’s collaborative and inclusive academic culture encourages discussion, critical thinking, and independent research. Additionally, the campus environment and location offer a high quality of student life, contributing positively to both academic focus and personal well-being. While the MSc GIS programme is academically strong, it could be further improved by strengthening direct links with industry. One key improvement would be the establishment of a dedicated placement cell for MSc GIS students. This placement cell could invite companies, organisations, and consultancies to conduct interviews directly on campus. Students could secure interviews simply by attending placement cell sessions, and if successful, receive offer letters directly—without the need to apply repeatedly through different external websites or platforms. Such a placement cell would reduce stress for students, save time, and ensure fair access to employment opportunities. It would also increase graduate employability and strengthen the university’s reputation among employers. By bridging the gap between academic learning and professional practice, the University of Exeter could make the MSc Geographical Information Science programme even more competitive and career-focused.

The MSc Geographical Information Science at the University of Exeter is taught through a blended learning approach, combining in-class lectures, practical lab sessions, workshops, and independent study. This balance allows students to develop both theoretical understanding and hands-on technical skills using GIS software and spatial data tools. The in-person teaching is particularly valuable for practical modules, as it encourages real-time problem solving and collaboration with peers. The course hours are well structured, with a manageable number of contact hours each week, giving students sufficient time for self-study, assignments, and research. Practical sessions are clearly aligned with lecture content, which helps reinforce learning and apply concepts effectively. Students have good access to lecturers and academic staff. Lecturers are approachable during office hours and are responsive to questions via email or online learning platforms. Module leaders provide clear guidance on coursework, assessments, and project expectations. In addition, dissertation supervision is supportive and tailored to individual research interests, allowing students to gain confidence in independent research. Overall, the teaching style promotes academic development while encouraging critical thinking and practical skill building. However, the course could benefit from additional industry-focused workshops, guest lectures, and career-oriented sessions, particularly linked to a future placement cell. This would further strengthen student engagement and better prepare graduates for professional roles in the GIS industry.
