The University of Cumbria was formed in 2007 after the merger of three teaching institutions. Since then, it has continued to grow into what it is now – a campus uni with five sites. These include some campuses in or near a UNESCO World Heritage site, so you'll be learning in some amazing locations. The university also prides itself on being welcoming and inclusive, and a place where academic staff get to know you as an individual.

The University of Cumbria has a dedicated careers service that supports you during your studies and for up to three years after graduation. You can book mock interviews, get CV feedback, attend careers events, and use the wealth of online resources. One-to-one meetings with careers advisers will give you tailored advice, and the online jobs board will help you find vacancies. All these will help to improve your job prospects.
By giving you work-related skills and vocational knowledge, the university will equip you well for your future career. A number of its courses lead directly to jobs such as teaching, nursing, and social work.
You'll have the chance to meet and learn from local and national employers from various sectors. The careers service invites them to attend careers fairs and lead webinars and events. These help you get insights into different industries, as well as start growing your professional network.
You may also be able to do a placement year or internship through your course. This will allow you to apply the new skills and knowledge you've learned in a real work environment. Placements also look good on your CV and often lead to employment after graduation.
As well as the skills you learn on your course, there are plenty of chances to develop your skills outside of your studies. If you become an SU rep, you'll get training in leadership and negotiation – valuable skills for any career in your future. Leading an SU group also helps you develop cooperative skills.
The University of Cumbria has a range of campus accommodation that is suitable for various budgets and preferences. Applicants who make Cumbria their first-choice uni, and who meet the eligibility criteria and apply by the deadline, are guaranteed a place in university halls.
There are over 600 beds across the uni's campuses, with around 250 more in Carlisle through the uni's nominated partner, Denton Holme Student Village. You'll also be able to find plenty of independent housing in Lancaster, Carlisle and Ambleside if university accommodation isn't for you.
Accommodation costs range from £96 to £146 per week and run for either 40 or 42 weeks, depending on your course of study. All accommodation is self-catered. Whether the cost includes bills will depend on the location. That said, the low rent prices make accommodation costs relatively low compared to elsewhere in the UK.
You'll also benefit from 24/7 security, and an events programme helps students in halls make new friends.
The best way to get a feel for a university is to go to an open day.
The University of Cumbria offers a range of scholarships and bursaries to help support low-income students. If you meet the criteria, this extra funding will help you pay for your living costs or course expenses. Scholarships and bursaries don't need to be paid back.
For example, the Cumbria Bursary is a financial support package for first year Home students whose family income is less than £25,000 per year. The bursary is worth £1,000 for each year of your studies (or £500 if you study part-time).
You can find out about all the scholarships and bursaries available, as well as their eligibility criteria, by visiting the uni's online funding pages.
At the University of Cumbria there's a wide range of degrees to choose from, across subject areas like health, sports, social work, teaching, business, law, science and the arts. If you're based in Carlisle or the Lake District, the local landscape and community often become part of your classroom, as courses take a hands-on approach to learning.
Most undergraduate degrees are only available for full-time study on campus. A few can be taken online. Full-time undergraduate degrees at Cumbria usually take three years to study. A number of courses include placement years, study abroad options, or an integrated master's year. These courses usually take four or five years to complete.
Courses include industry-relevant content, guest speakers from industry, and real-world exercises as part of the learning. Many of the university's courses include experiential learning and work placements with leading employers. These help you gain practical skills and industry insights while you study.
This hands-on approach not only deepens your understanding of your chosen subject but also prepares you for a career in a field you're passionate about.
Teaching is in semesters, with assessment weeks at the end of each semester and an induction week before the first. Undergraduates attend for two semesters, while postgraduates have three.
Fees for UK-resident undergraduates (Home students) are currently £9,535. If you're an international student, you can find the course fees in our course listings.
