Leeds Beckett University (LBU) is located in Leeds, West Yorkshire. The university has a city centre campus and a second campus in Headingley, just north-west of the city. In recent years, LBU has invested over £200 million into developing its campuses, including the Carnegie School of Sports building as well as the Leeds School of Arts building.
The Whatuni Student Choice Awards ranked LBU 10th for Facilities in 2023. As the WUSCAs are voted for by students, you can be assured that students of LBU enjoy their time at the uni. As well as being approved by students, the university has achieved the international environmental standard ISO 14001. It’s the first English university to achieve this, demonstrating its commitment to being green.
Leeds itself has a Purple Flag, which recognises excellence in managing the evening and night-time economy. The city has a wide range of pubs, bars and clubs to party the night away, and with a large student population you can be sure that the city will always have events catering to students.
As well as the city’s nightlife, LBU students can also benefit from the city’s shopping opportunities as well as its history, museums and galleries. Leeds has a major train station, allowing students to easily travel nationwide, while Leeds Bradford Airport offers a range of international destinations.
As well as three-year full-time undergraduate courses, Leeds Beckett University also offers a range of their undergraduate subjects available for part-time study. Typically, a part-time undergraduate course takes five or six years to complete and allows you to continue other commitments during your studies.
Many courses also offer the opportunity to study abroad at a range of partner institutions. You may be able to study a semester abroad, which would be in the second year of your degree, or you could opt to study abroad for a full year. If you choose to go abroad for a year, you’ll add an extra year onto your degree and go abroad after completing your second year at LBU.
LBU also offers a range of integrated masters degrees. These typically take four years to complete and allow you to seamlessly progress from undergraduate to postgraduate study. Most of these degrees are in the engineering school.
Entry requirements vary across courses at LBU, so we’ve given you a sample of entry requirements for courses across different colleges in order to give you an idea of the kinds of grades needed.
BA Journalism requires 112 UCAS Tarif points, and candidates must submit a portfolio. You should also have GCSE English language grade 5/B and GCSE maths grade 4/C or higher.
LLB Law also requires 112 UCAS Tariff points and you should also have GCSE English language and maths at grade C/4 or above, and BSc Geography requires the same.
Applicants for MEng Civil Engineering will be asked to achieve 128 UCAS points as this is an integrated masters course. You should have a minimum of 80 UCAS points from maths and science subjects, with 40 in maths, and you should pass any practical element of your science course. You should also have GCSE English language grade C/4 and GCSE maths grade B/6 or above.
Finally, for BA Sport Development, you’ll be asked for 104-120 UCAS points and GCSE English language and maths at grade C/4 or higher.
Entry requirements are subject to change and are for guidance only. Please see the university website for more information and reach out to the admissions team with any questions.
At LBU, you can apply for accommodation once you’ve accepted an offer to study at the uni. Uni accommodation starts from around £140 per week and goes up to around £250 per week if you’re looking at studio apartments.
There’s a mixture of different room types available, with ensuite or shared bathroom facilities on offer. You can also find accommodation options with an on-site fitness suite and most accommodation options have a common room so you can socialise with students living in other flats.
Included in your rent you can expect security, maintenance, all bills, internet access and basic contents insurance. Some flats have laundry facilities in the flat, but you’ll always have access to laundry facilities (usually subject to additional fees).
Most accommodation doesn’t have parking spaces so you might want to leave your car at home. You’ll find it far easier to lock down an accommodation option with bike storage if you’re a cyclist or thinking of taking it up.
If halls of residence aren’t for you, there’s plenty of opportunities to rent privately across the city. LBU can support you in finding suitable accommodation.
