Everyone is so supportive and you feel a sense of community there. I moved from another university and Essex is everything I could want for the experience of university. Lecturers are so nice and dedicated to their students succeeding. The events and variety of them could be improved on as the social calendar can sometimes be lacking.

The reading list for this course is high-quality. The selected texts are relevant and provide a strong academic foundation. The overall environment is positive, and the teaching staff are knowledgeable. ​Cons: The curriculum is currently too focused on literary theory rather than the practical application of writing. If I had wanted to focus solely on reading and analyzing existing books, I would have enrolled in a Literature degree. ​The main issue is the lack of weekly practical work. For a writing course to be effective, students should have their own work analyzed by tutors and peers every week. Currently, there is not enough time dedicated to evaluating our own progress or practicing technical skills in a classroom setting.

I've been attending the University of Essex since 2006 for my degree then my Masters and now I'm into the 6th year of my PhD. Overall, my experience at the university has been extremely positive. The academic environment is intellectually stimulating, and the teaching quality is consistently strong. Lecturers demonstrate deep subject knowledge and a genuine commitment to student success, often going beyond scheduled contact hours to provide additional support and guidance. The curriculum is well‑structured, relevant to current industry standards, and encourages both critical thinking and practical application. Assessments are fair, clearly explained, and designed to help develop meaningful, transferable skills. Support services, including the library, digital learning platforms, and academic advising, are reliable and accessible. Communication from the university is timely and transparent, which helps students stay informed about key updates and opportunities. Campus facilities are modern, well‑maintained, and conducive to both independent study and collaborative work. The university demonstrates a clear commitment to student wellbeing through counselling services, wellbeing workshops, and inclusive initiatives that make the campus feel safe and welcoming. Overall, the university fosters a supportive, inclusive, and high‑quality learning environment, and I would highly recommend it to prospective students.

I am mostly distance, part time, but am so impressed by my department and the wider university services. Staff are engaged and facilitative, and there is a real sense of pride in the institution. And the library is amazingly responsive.

The su could do more non-drinking events. And the maintenance team for the accommodation is slow and communicates poorly.
