I love the area; it’s beautiful and everything is in walking distance! I think the libraries and the facilities at the SU are excellent places to study with lots of freedom to choose the right environment for you. This is because all areas are different in atmosphere and noise volume etc. I love the amount of spaces we have to do our study and find that, for me in the John Percival building, the lecture halls are the perfect size and environment to do learning. Perhaps improvement could be made to the look of the John Percival, as well as a change to some lecture rooms because the tables are on the arm of the chair because this is pretty impractical for note taking. But overall I’m super happy with Cardiff University and I’m so glad I chose to come here!

I was quite disappointed when the religious studies part of my course was completely online at the beginning of the year, I found it to be very isolating and not good for my learning. However, I am so happy that the university is so good at listening student feedback and have increased the in-person time. I was also happy when I asked advice from a lecturer and they offered to give me a zoom call to help, this shows how far lecturers will go to ensure we get the best out our learning and their teaching. I think the in-person hours for both could be improved but overall I’m happy with the experience. As a first year I do not know much about work placement, internships and career prospects yet but I have had opportunities sent to me via email and learning central which are very interesting and would provide me with an additional skill set and experience. I have very much enjoyed philosophy and I think the course content is very interesting: I would definitely recommend it. Religious studies I feel was described to me or had different connotations to what it is. I feel it is very history oriented and includes a lot less argument based essays which is what I signed up for. Nevertheless, the modules for the second semester are much more interesting and I am really getting to grips with this course.

Talybont North was not my first choice, nevertheless I am going to be sad to leave it at the end of the year. The facilities may be small but they are workable. It is very close to a retail park including an Aldi and a Tesco which is very convenient and helps money saving to have two. It is a 25 minute walk to the University and 40 to the city centre, this is great in terms of not needing to purchase a bus pass or any other means of public transport. However, it is still quite far from the city centre on foot, especially if you are wanting to be close to all of the interesting things Cardiff has to offer including night life, culture and restaurants. I am grateful of the social centre, which is often quiet and a great space to work. We are also very near a park which means it is easy to take time out of the working environment and get some exercise. Also, every time we have a problem with something, they are dealt with efficiently through an easy process of reporting the problem online. But lastly, despite paying the same as all other residents, some of the houses and flats also in Talybont North look different and less updated inside and it seems a little unfair to charge the same amount. This would be my only real criticism.

Great university with great staff and students. Could not have asked for a better university

The best aspect of my course is the blended learning and the seminars provide an exciting playground for ideas and discussions. The worst aspect of my course was that my first year was online because of the pandemic; likewise, we are affected in February by the strikes.
