Love bath, wish I had researched more into the uni. Very college-y. Lecturers treat you like children.

Modules feel like they're made up on the spot and used for the university to get ideas for their own projects (i.e. the client you are given is often Bath Spa Uni). Projects tend to be the most random things... we expected to be designing Restaurants, Retail, Hotels, Bars etc as these are the types of projects interior design employers and companies look for but so far we have done 2 art studios, an art gallery, a shipping container pop-up shop, an auditorium, a student accommodation and 1 restaurant project. Everyone enjoyed the restaurant project the most.

The whole experience of studying this year has taught me so much about being adaptable, being independent and, almost, how to seamlessly do an online presentation! It was a big question for a lot of people whether or not to go to uni this year due to covid but I genuinely have no regrets about deciding to go. Yes the nightlife was impacted, I didn’t get a freshers, but that just didn’t feel like a big deal to me at all. I’ve still made some amazing friends, done PLENTY of pub trips and got to enjoy my new home. As my course is for my dream career I was slightly worried that a negative experience could put me off but my experience this year has been so positive that I’m just even more excited to carry on in this industry. I would recommend the uni, and especially the art and design school, to anyone. It’s a great place to be completely free and creative.

The uni building is really open plan so it constantly feels well ventilated which was important during covid. It also brings a collaborative feel to the uni because you can always see what other courses are doing. I got my own workspace and drawing board which prevented any cross contamination and always made my area feel safe and clean. The uni facilities were still open as usual, just sometimes with a limit on capacity. We were still able to use the many workshops and learn new skills.

I have been so, so lucky with the way that my course has been run during covid. It has been such a difficult year for both students and lecturers but they have gone to every effort to try and make it as normal as possible. Whenever it was possible (which was for the majority of the year) we were allowed into the studio as much as we liked and still had access to workshops etc. We were constantly in contact with the lecturers and if we weren’t able to go into uni or even be in Bath due to travel restrictions or having to isolate they went out of their way to check in with you and make you feel included. They know everyone by name and keep up with the work everyone is doing. Our weeks were structured so that anything that was better to do online, such as lectures or industry talks, was done on calls (usually twice a week) and for 2 days a week you could go in and work in the studio with the lecturers there. As well as this we still had the option of an additional 2 days of independent time in the studio. We had many hours of in person teaching which was so helpful as it’s such a practical course. For those who couldn’t come into the studio new collaborative technology was set up and you would usually have two calls a week to upload your work and ask for advice. Most weeks I was going into the studio 4 days a week, it was great.

We have had many guest speakers from industry that taught us so much about different paths our careers could take as well as how we could get there. We are encouraged to think in a way that we would in industry to prepare us. The uni are always sending career related emails.
