University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
The campuses in Cheltenham are a lot better than Oxstalls in Gloucester, as are the towns themselves.
The Drama and PFA courses are brilliant however, and I strongly recommend if you're not entirely convinced my drama school. Many students graduate into the profession and itself due to strong ties with Equity.
The university look after you really well, and will solve any problems.
You'll have a great time, even if the halls are hugely varied but generally a bit grim. Living in a house first year might be best.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Library facilities are lacking. Not enough booksfor students, most are on other campuses.
The course facilities are great however, with purpose built fully kitted out rooms.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
If you ever have a problem, the uni WILL fix it. They'll pay for a dyslexia test, offer counselling and a Help Zone is on every campus.
In your first year especially, you will also receive a lot of academic help, the ease the transition into uni. There is a section of the help zone dedicated to helping you with your essays etc.
Take full advantage of everything that's on offer.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
At Oxstalls, the SU is great if you're a sports student, not so much if not.
Buying SU merchandise at Oxstalls is tricky.
The SU at other campuses is better.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Gloucester is rough. Walking on your own at night is scary.
If you're on the other campuses however, you'll be in Cheltenham and Cheltenham is brilliant. Most of the students go out in Cheltenham, even if living in Gloucester.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Make sure you try and join a society when you're here. It just enhances your experience so much. Cheerleading is great fun, well run and everyone is friendly.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I'm studying Drama, and all the lecturers are absolutely brilliant. You become close and form a little family. They are always looking out for you.
Also, as the course intake is small (max 40), you don't just feel like a rain drop in an ocean, and the experience is personal.
The modules are great fun and the underpinning of all the cool stuff like Stage Combat makes the course more like a Drama School Course
It is intense though, and you will be in for every day of the week, some days until gone 7.
There's no written exams and the practical/theory work is about an 80/20 - 70/30 split, as you learn through doing.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
The University work really hard on the progression of students after graduation and work with businesses in the county to help students move into work.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Oxstalls Halls are overpriced and poorly built. Also you pay the same rent for the smallest room. However, all the rooms are ensuite and maintenance will happily fix any problems you may have.
