You’ll typically start your career with an entry-level position in social services, such as an assistant social worker or volunteer. As you gain experience and training, you’ll be able to move into more senior social services roles. With substantial experience you can move into manager and director roles, before progressing to become head of service or chief executive.
Self-employment isn’t usually possible in social services.
You may decide to use your experience to become a practice educator, supporting and managing social services students. You might transfer from another sector or spend some time on secondment elsewhere to broaden your knowledge and experience.
