In a world facing critical global challenges such as climate change, food insecurity, and the need for biodiversity conservation, knowledge and practical skills in Zoology are in high demand.As a Zoology student at the University of Leeds, you’ll study everything from animal physiology and behaviour, to how animals are shaped by evolution and their environment.Through practical and field work, you’ll explore the effects of climate change on wild animals, how they adapt and develop methods for sustainable livestock production. Along the way, you’ll develop your skills in teamwork, independent working, problem-solving and communication skills – all highly valued by employers.The integrated Masters (MBiol) gives you an additional year of specialist training on key topics, with an intensive focus on the development and practice of advanced research skills. You may also choose to apply for our 3-year BSc and transfer to an MBiol up until the end of your second year, subject to suitable academic performance.Course highlightsTake part in zoology specific field courses looking at diverse habitats within the UK Choose optional field courses to study sustainable urban ecology and African ecology in South Africa. Conduct a research project in the final year of your degree. Experience extensive practical work from the lab to the field, from the use of cutting-edge molecular techniques in science, to animal physiology, sustainable livestock farming, and biodiversity survey techniques. Research-led advanced topic modules in your final year cover diverse topics such as genetics, conservation science, evolution and animal behaviour. Our year in industry programme allows you to gain experience working with organisations, developing new skills for your CV. Experience life and learning in a different country through our study abroad programme, where you'll gain fresh perspectives and develop skills valued by employersOne year of additional specialist training culminating in an extended research project. Flexible degreesZoology is a degree within the School of Biology which offers you flexibility throughout your time studying at Leeds.All of our biology degree courses share compulsory modules in the first year. A key benefit of having a common first year is that at the end of year 1, there are opportunities to transfer onto degree courses in Biology, Ecology and Conservation Biology and Genetics, subject to approval. Additional degree courses may be available depending on your academic background.FacilitiesYour degree will be based in the Faculty of Biological Sciences, one of the largest centres for biological sciences research in the UK and home to cutting-edge research facilities. The course makes use of the UK’s largest and most advanced facility for research into pig nutrition, behaviour, welfare & health, and production systems, the National Pig Centre. You’ll also have access to field research stations based in Europe and Africa to help you learn about ecology and behaviour in natural surroundings. Leeds is just a short distance from the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District and has easy access to the Lake District, North York Moors and the spectacular Yorkshire coast, providing plenty of opportunities to work and learn outdoors.
