Statistical Data Science lies at the heart of contemporary data analytics. It transforms data into useful decision-making and helps solve complex problems in a broad range of industries.

Our BSc in Statistical Data Science covers both the theory and practical parts of modern statistics. It provides comprehensive training and hands-on experience in modelling, analysing, and understanding real-world data. This kind of data is crucial in the fields of the economy, industry, and research.

The early years of the degree cover basic mathematics, probability, and statistics. The final years focus on advanced specialist topics in statistical modelling, data science, machine learning, probability, and stochastic processes. Students also have the opportunity to spend time at Heriot-Watt's Malaysia campus through our Go Global programme.

Our programmes are designed with flexibility in mind, so if you fancy a change of direction you can transfer to a range of other mathematical, statistical or actuarial programmes during the first two years.

In this programme you'll learn from our research-active academics, with expertise in the following key areas:

  • Data Analysis and Visualisation: Proficiency in employing cutting-edge techniques for comprehending and presenting data effectively
  • Statistical Modelling and Inference: The utilization of statistical methods to derive predictions and gain deeper insights into data
  • Machine Learning and Predictive Analytics: Exploring how machines can acquire knowledge from data to make informed predictions and decisions
  • Statistical Programming and Big Data Technologies: Mastery of computer programs for managing extensive and intricate datasets in research.
  • Bayesian Statistics and Decision Theory: The exploration of rational decision-making in the presence of uncertain information
  • Statistical Consulting and Communication: Enhancing the capability to convey intricate statistical concepts to diverse audiences in the realm of research
  • Statistical Ethics and Data Privacy: Ethical considerations associated with data handling and ensuring its security and confidentiality in the context of research
