This new programme showcases our recent exciting strategic investments in facilities and staff that are generating new research and innovation activity in medical physics, in particular through exploitation of nuclear facilities. An ethos of "research led" education underpins the programme. At Birmingham we host a unique set of Nuclear Physics facilities which will equip students with the ability to use industry level equipment. For example, the MC40 Cyclotron produces medical isotopes for the NHS and there is an active programme of research on medical applications, including radiotherapy. Our newly built High Flux Accelerator-Driven Neutron Facility – which is a national facility – provides unique capability for neutron radiobiology studies and research in Boron Neutron Capture Therapy treatments for cancer. There is a growing team of Physicists exploiting the facilities, and we work closely with academics in the University’s Medical School. Birmingham also boasts long-established links with the Physics Department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, one of the top-5 largest UK hospitals. You will be taught by academics who are global experts in their field, you'll gain a broad understanding of the essential concepts of physics, ranging from entropy to quantum mechanics and beyond. The transferable skills you’ll also learn will make you very employable; including problem solving, computing and programming, as well as vital soft skills such as presenting.
