Build advanced expertise in insects, ecosystems and applied entomological science. The MSc Entomology at Harper Adams University develops specialist skills in insect identification, ecology and field-based research, preparing you for careers in conservation, ecological consultancy, sustainable agriculture or progression to PhD study in a world facing urgent biodiversity and environmental challenges. The courseInsects underpin ecosystems, food production and biodiversity worldwide, yet the UK and many other countries face a growing shortage of trained entomologists with strong field, identification and applied research skills. Sector-wide reviews in ecology and environmental science highlight a persistent ''capacity crisis'', with employers reporting difficulties recruiting professionals able to carry out ecological surveys, species-level identification, monitoring and data analysis. At the same time, national and international commitments to biodiversity recovery, habitat restoration, biosecurity and sustainable land use – alongside policy drivers such as biodiversity net gain and pesticide reduction – have intensified demand for specialists who understand insects in both managed and natural systems. The MSc Entomology at Harper Adams University directly addresses this need. It provides rigorous training in insect biology, ecology and identification, combined with applied perspectives spanning conservation, agriculture and pest management. The course is uniquely positioned within a specialist land-based university, offering access to farms, field sites, laboratories and active research that bring entomology to life in real-world contexts.
A UK honours degree (minimum 2:2) or equivalent overseas qualification. Applicants with a good FdSc/HND pass in a relevant subject area plus at least two years relevant industrial or professional experience may also be considered.
