MSc Speech and Language Therapy (pre-registration) at Leeds Beckett prepares you to join the speech and language therapy workforce as part of a multidisciplinary team. Your career will involve advocating for communication rights and supporting individuals to live fully and expressively. This accelerated, pre-registration postgraduate degree is suitable if you have a relevant undergraduate degree - such as psychology, linguistics, English language, or biology. You'll also be passionate about fostering collaborative relationships that support communication and wellbeing around eating and drinking. As part of this course, you'll: Develop the knowledge and skills to work alongside individuals with diverse communication profiles Study via a blend of lectures, seminars, and hands-on learning Learn to co-create supportive strategies and approaches with children and adults who experience speech, language and communication needs, and/or eating, drinking, and swallowing needs Gain real-world experience in varied settings: from in-patient hospital wards and clinics, to community settings such as schools, day centres, and clients' homes, building your confidence and preparing you to work in dynamic, inclusive environments Take a critical and reflective approach to learning, with opportunities to explore your interests in depth, including a range of university-based and clinical placement experiences Professional recognition On successful completion of this course, you'll be eligible to apply to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and become recognised as a speech and language therapist (SLT). The HCPC have certain standards all registrants must meet to legally practice under a protected profession title. You'll also meet the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) Eating, Drinking, and Swallowing competency framework, giving you the knowledge and skills to work with people with eating and drinking differences.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have at least a 2:1 Honours degree in the cognate subjects of science, which may include Biomedical Sciences, Human and Social Sciences, Neuroscience, Psychology or Sociology; language which may include English Language, English Language and Literature, Human Communication Studies, Linguistics or any foreign language; Education, which may include Childhood Studies, Teaching or Special Education Needs or a Pre-Registration subject such as Midwifery, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Radiography or Social Work. Applicants with a 2:1 in another subject may be considered if they have relevant professional experience in health, education, social care or language teaching, this may include working as an SLT assistant, a care and support worker, as a teaching assistant, teaching English as a foreign language or extensive voluntary work with a communication impairment charity.
