Developed in partnership with the Institute of Place Management (IPM), this part-time course will give you the practical skills to succeed, and develop into a confident, reflective place leader.Learn the principles of place management and leadership. You’ll look at the role of modern place marketing and branding in the co-creation of place and place identity. You’ll also refine your leadership skills as you study units on place governance and learn how to build lasting and effective partnerships in a variety of cultural contexts. PgDip and MSc students will also learn about different approaches to local economic development and inclusive place-making, and the research skills and knowledge required to undertake place based data collection and analysis.
This unit introduces you to contemporary challenges to place development. Drawing on key theories of local and regional economic development, it will examine place development in a global context. The unit will critique dominant place-making practices, to establish principles of effective and inclusive place development.
Combining contemporary theory from both business and geography with real-word practice, this unit will introduce you to the principles of place marketing, branding and communication. Drawing on a variety of disciplines and professions, the unit will critically explore place marketing concepts and practices, including the use of social media and the construction of digital place identity, the co-creation of place and place experiences, and service-dominant logic.
This unit introduces you to the principles of place management from an interdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder perspective. Drawing on theory from both public and private sector management, the unit will equip you with the ability to understand leadership and partnership development in the context of place, to understand the array of practices involved in place management, as well as understanding a range of governance structures within a variety of cultural and other contexts.
You are expected to identify structure, frame and investigate a complex managerial or business issue within the context of place management, and produce a substantial written document of their achievements and conclusions.
This unit introduces you to research design, data collection and analysis. The unit will cover key stages involved in developing an academic research proposal including research approaches, primary and secondary data collection, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, and writing up and presenting research findings.
