Course overview

Mathematics is essential in shaping and improving modern life. It underpins the algorithms and calculations that drive contemporary technology, enables the analysis of extensive datasets to reveal trends, and supports a wide range of fields from healthcare to finance.

Our Mathematics (Pure Mathematics) degree integrates a thorough study of the three core disciplines-pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics-with specialist final-year topics in pure mathematics. The programme also prioritises the development of
problem-solving, logical reasoning, practical, and employability skills that are highly valued by employers.

Course content

During your first year, you will build a strong foundation in mathematical thinking with modules in algebra, calculus, and differential equations, whilst developing your skills in data analysis using the statistical software R. You will also begin to develop key employability skills by working in teams on group projects, solving problems and communicating your findings in visual ways.

Throughout the programme youll apply your learning to real-world theories or experiences, providing context to your learning and strengthening your understanding. Youll also have the chance to align your studies to your passions by choosing from a variety of optional modules.

In year two, you will strengthen your knowledge in pure and applied mathematics, probability and statistics, whilst expanding your skillset by learning the programming language Python.

Focusing on your employability skills, you will have the opportunity to spend time in industry with both full time and modular placement opportunities. You will also build on your professional and transferable skills with extended problem work, report writing, effective communication of mathematical results, and collaboration with others.

In your final year you will study specialised modules related to pure mathematics including Group Theory, Number Theory and Cryptography. Focusing on algebraic structures, beginning with their fundamental properties and continuing to more advanced applications, you will develop your abstract thinking and logical argument.

You may also choose to work on a final year project, applying theoretical knowledge and problem-solving skills to a technical, software, research or business problem. Your project is an excellent opportunity for you to draw together skills in experimental study design, critical interpretation of data, presentation and project management.
