Mathematics and Theoretical Physics - BSc (Hons)

University of Lincoln

Study the language behind the universe and learn how mathematics explains everything from black holes and quantum mechanics to finance, data, and advanced technology. At the University of Lincoln, Mathematics and Theoretical Physics combines rigorous mathematical thinking with the physics that shapes our understanding of the world. You'll explore how complex theories become real-world solutions, while developing analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills that employers value across science, technology, finance, engineering, and research. This course is designed for students who enjoy solving problems, thinking logically, and understanding how the universe works, but who may not want to choose between maths and physics. You'll study both subjects together, learning how advanced mathematics is used to model physical systems, predict behaviour, and tackle scientific challenges. Unlike many traditional maths degrees, this course gives you the opportunity to apply theory to real scientific questions. Unlike broader physics degrees, it offers a stronger mathematical focus that prepares you for highly analytical careers and postgraduate study. At Lincoln, you'll learn in a supportive environment with small-group tutorials, research-informed teaching, and access to academics working in areas including computational mathematics, condensed matter physics, and applied modelling. The course is accredited by both the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) and the Institute of Physics (IOP), helping support future professional recognition.
