Introductory Certificate in Counselling - Certificate

Birmingham Newman University

The teaching is of a really high standard and the lecturers have in depth clinical and practical experience. Taught sessions are interactive and collaborative and their is lots of opportunity to reflect and self develop. The location of the university can be challenging as it is a 45-50 minute bus journey from central station in Birmingham. It would be great if there was some sort of faster travel option for students or a more direct bus/coach straight to newman.

A fantastic university thay has welcomed me into my first year. At the age of 42 I didn't think I'd be able to do it but with the amazing support I've been given I now know I can do this degree. The lecturers (Steve & Jo) are absolutely fabulous & are making learning fun, engaging & fascinating. They are both so kind & helpful & are so keen for us to learn, grow & be successful it fills me a confidence I never knew I had. The student support & disability team have been fantastic & are supporting me the areas I know I will struggle with. The library staff are wonderful, so helpful even when my confusions are so basic to sort there is no judgement, just met with a smile. The reception staff need a mention too, so warm & welcoming & super helpful on directing me to where I need to be! The university as a whole is lovely, a clean, safe environment to allow us all to learn successfully. I absolutely love it here!

Best aspects of uni: hands down the staff. Constantly striving to make sure modules not only contain a wealth of information, but are also delivered in an accessible, often engaging way. Lecturers really care about you and want you to succeed. The course is comprehensive and I feel like has equipped me to be able to start planning next steps in my career and enter the workforce. The lecturers also really care about the topics they're teaching and are very knowledgeable -- their passion is palpable. There's also amazing staff at Student Support and Learning Development, for those of us who need some extra help.

The balance of on-campus and self-directed/remote working is great. The lecturers are knowledgeable and helpful. The staff are supportive and have helped me through what has been a trying few years, allowing me to continue my course despite having kids, work, bereavements and mental health concerns to balance. I have been encouraged to push myself further than I thought I could go when I first started, which has definitely helped boost my confidence and resilience.

Smaller campus, easier to navigate with modern facilities. The disabled facilities and communication needs to be improved.
