Course overview

Organisations are only as good as the people who work within them. If you want to take a central role in shaping organisational culture, then this course is for you.

You gain an understanding of the complex and changing context of human resource management (HRM), and the importance of resilience and sustainability in turbulent business environments. You develop an awareness of contemporary HRM issues in readiness for being a future-thinking practitioner with cutting-edge knowledge of human resource developments.

This course develops your knowledge and skills as a HRM practitioner, responsible for growing an agile and ethical workforce. You take the lead on managing the recruitment and development of employee talent within organisations, employing the right balance of staff in terms of skills and experience, and maximising employee and organisational performance.

The applied element allows you to develop practice-based solutions to real-world problems. You take on a consultancy role, working on projects or internships, identifying opportunities and ideas, before going on to present strategic solutions to the client. You develop personal and professional knowledge, skills and behaviours through a process of self-reflection on your practice.

Professional accreditation

Membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) is highly valued and widely accepted as a requirement of HR practice by employers. You are encouraged to apply for student membership of the Institute within the first few weeks of study. CIPD membership grades are dependent on knowledge and behaviours. This MA meets the underpinning knowledge requirements for the CIPD Professional membership grades, however the membership grade awarded by CIPD is also based on your practical workplace experience of HR. Completion of the MA allows you to apply for the CIPD professional membership level of Associate Member.

How you learn

An interactive workshop approach is used to develop understanding through lectures, individual and group activities, case studies and presentations.

How you are assessed

Assessment methods vary according to the module studied and include examinations, assignments and presentations.

Career opportunities:

You gain real-world experience, working on a project or internship to enhance your global career prospects.

Effective human resource management is recognised by organisations as a key area in achieving business success. There is high demand for highly trained and skilled human resource professionals. The MA Human Resource Management degree provides a unique advantage in the jobs market.
