As a student in the School of Humanities & Social Sciences, you’ll be encouraged to think about your future career right from the start of your learning journey. Information and advice about relevant future career options will be built into the first year of your degree. During your second and third years of study, you’ll be able to choose modules with live brief learning challenges (real life projects designed by employers) and work placement opportunities.
Course structureYou’ll study a balance of history and media modules in your first year, helping you develop a strong skillset and knowledge of methodologies in each discipline. Things like source analysis and media interpretation. In your second year, you’ll bring your skillset together by completing your first interdisciplinary module. You’ll also begin driving your studies in the direction you want through a wide range of module options. Your third year culminates in the completion of your dissertation, which explores and celebrates the interconnections between history and media. Employability is embedded throughout your course.
City of cultureYou’ll be studying in the centre of Leeds, in close proximity to a number of museums, art galleries, theatres, film production companies and recording studios. Through our links with the city, you can choose from a range of modules focusing on urban culture, including field trips that will see you conduct your own original research. You’ll have the chance to attend guest lectures through the school’s Cultural Conversations speaker series. These see staff share their research and include talks delivered by leading figures, such as TV historian Pam Cox. Our involvement in the Being Human project has seen us work closely with Leeds City Council and Leeds museums, and in past years has focused on subjects such as dystopian fiction and digital stories of the past.

Investigate some of the major developments considered to have shaped the modern European world. Your studies will take a thematic approach, looking at topics such as the Enlightenment, political and industrial revolutions, changing class structures and gender relations, and Europe's often violent encounters with the wider world. You will establish a knowledge-base of key elements of European modernity and a chronological framework for further study. Optional modules may also be available for this course.
This module will introduce you to the key themes and historical debates around the emergence of modern Britain, predominantly through a social and cultural lens. You will study the key developments in the era, exploring urbanisation, the class system, popular culture and mass leisure, crime, poverty and social reform through your lectures. Your seminars will focus on source analysis and group work, with emphasis on the core assessment of the module. Optional modules may also be available for this course.
Explore contemporary media consumption case studies, ranging from the habitual practices consumers develop while interacting with mobile devices, to how they navigate through virtual game worlds. You’ll consider how social groups experience, consume, and interact with the media forms they encounter in everyday settings. The module emphasises how to research the ways the media is experienced, drawing on ethnographic and empirical case studies. Upon completion, you’ll be equipped with a grounding in the methods media analysts use to study audiences and consumers, which you’ll utilise throughout your degree. You will study key approaches to researching TV texts, audiences and institutions. Your studies will equip you with the skills to critically apply models from TV studies to the content and consumption of 21st-century TV. Optional modules may also be available for this course.

Gain an introduction to the major political, social, and cultural developments in 20th-Century Europe. You'll adopt thematic and comparative approaches to the study of European societies to build a useful framework for understanding modernity to post-modernity during this period. You'll study a number of key areas including the impact of the two world wars upon Europe, the rise of totalitarian dictatorships and the efforts at peace-making across the continent. Explore the variety of resources, questions and contexts that underpin the historical, political and geographical development of media and cultural studies. You will study the 'modern' media culture and look at a range of historical and analytical issues associated with this complex arena. You will gain a historical, political and geographical grounding and context for your studies, as well as broader perspectives on current issues in the study of media.
