If you’re interested in theatre making and creative writing and would like to combine theory with practice, then this course is for you. You'll explore the critical and creative contexts for these complementary subjects, making use of placements, workshops and opportunities to share your work with different audiences. Unlock your creative potential at Birmingham. With the support of our expert lecturers, you'll dive into a selection of genres across theatre and creative writing - from immersive and participatory performance to Victorian drama, nonfiction writing, poetry and writing for media. Graduate with a detailed awareness of and sought-after experience making theatre and writing creatively - think journalism, publishing, arts management, performing and teaching. Make use of our studio and performance spaces, cultural and creative industry facilities, podcasting suites and content creation studios. Participate in RSC led workshops – make use of our collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and take part in fun and interactive study trips. Learn from bestselling authors and theatre industry experts – including artistic directors, freelance performers and live artists, as well as 2021 Royal Society of Literature’s Ondaatje Prize winner Professor Ruth Gilligan, 2021 Forward Poetry Prize winner Professor Luke Kennard and one of Granta magazine’s 2023 best young novelists Dr Anna Metcalfe. Live and study in a creative city – from literature festivals to theatres, to spoken word and poetry events, there’s always lots of culture to soak up in Birmingham. You’ll be assessed in different ways to suit each module. At the start of a module, you’ll be told how and when you’ll be assessed. Methods will vary but may include coursework (e.g., essays), group or individual presentations and projects, exams, reports or computer-based assignments.
