Course overview Empower your career in sports and allied professions at an internationally renowned department. Become part of a unique learning environment with world leading academic research and applied practice providing high level support for your career development. The Doctorate in Sport and Exercise Science is distinct from a traditional PhD. Instead of a sole focus on academic research training, this degree has a more practical emphasis. You’ll evolve into a professional researcher capable of conducting impactful research and applying findings to enhance practices within the field of sport and exercise. This practically focused doctorate is ideal for sport professionals aiming to become practicing researchers, driving innovation and excellence in their fields. Course highlights Become an expert researcher by studying at one of the UK's leading research departments, ranked 6th in the latest Research Excellence Framework. Based in one of the UK’s largest custom-built Sport and Exercise facility, you will access state-of-the-art research labs and a wide range of equipment for diverse research areas. The research component is highly tailored, allowing you to explore diverse areas like sport and exercise science, nutrition, coaching, physiotherapy, sports medicine, sport education, and sport management. Our blended learning approach, combined with personalised tutor-student supervision, ensures flexibility. You can engage with the program’s learning requirements in a manner that suits your current professional commitments.
You will be required to hold an undergraduate degree and an M-level qualification (including research degrees such as MRes or MPhil) in a discipline related to sport and exercise science. Relevant backgrounds may include roles such as sport and exercise scientist, coach, physiotherapist, medical doctor, sport educator, or sport manager. You will not be admitted onto the programme unless you possess a suitable knowledge base of research methods acquired through M-level training. In some cases—such as medicine or physiotherapy—your professional vocation will also influence the suitability of your application, the area of research you undertake, and your eligibility for a specific named award (e.g. in physiotherapy or medicine).
