Working with classmates from different countries and backgrounds improves teamwork skills and exposes us to different perspectives on cybersecurity issues around the world. The campus facilities, including computer labs and library resources, are also helpful. The online learning platforms (Canvas, library databases, recorded lectures) make it easier to revise and catch up when needed. Overall, the course gives a good theoretical base and helps students understand how cybersecurity works in real-world organizations. Worst Aspects / Areas for Improvement The biggest weakness is the lack of hands-on practical training. Cybersecurity is a technical field, but most modules focus heavily on theory, reports, and presentations instead of real labs, tools, and simulations. Students would benefit much more from regular practical sessions using real cybersecurity tools (e.g., Kali Linux, SIEM tools, penetration testing labs, network simulations). Another issue is limited industry exposure. There are very few guest lectures, live case studies, or partnerships with companies. Adding internships, short placements, or industry projects would greatly improve job readiness. Some modules also overlap in content, which can feel repetitive. The program could be improved by reducing repetition and adding more advanced, technical topics for students who want deeper skills. Finally, more career support specifically for cybersecurity roles would be very helpful. Workshops on CVs, technical interviews, certifications (like CompTIA Security+, CEH), and job pathways would make the program stronger.

Sunderland itself is a calm and affordable city, which is a big advantage for students. The cost of living is lower compared to many major UK cities, and public transport, supermarkets, and essential services are easily accessible. The beach being close to the city adds a nice touch to student life, and the Students’ Union organizes events and workshops that make it easier to meet new people and get involved in different activities. There are still some areas where improvement would help. Accommodation options could be increased during peak intakes, and more practical industry links or internships in certain courses would make the learning experience even stronger. It would also be great to see more student events on weekends for better social engagement. Overall, the University of Sunderland offers a supportive learning environment, affordable living, and a friendly student community. I would recommend it to students looking for a quieter city with good academic support and a comfortable student life.

Overall, the university provides a diverse and inclusive community that makes it a great place to learn and grow. Some modules could benefit from quicker feedback on assignments, as timely feedback is important for improvement. Additionally, increasing opportunities for hands-on projects, industry engagement, and career guidance would further enhance the student experience.

Best aspects: The lectures are always interesting and the lecturers are incredibly approachable. The content is engaging and challenging, and the lecturers ensure that you are being pushed enough by it. The cyberzone facility is fantastic too, with plenty of network components making it easy to visualise complex network setups. Plus there's a Lidl close by, so that's a perk... Negative aspects: The coding (at least in first year) is all done in C# in Visual Studio, so very Microsoft + Windows based, and tough to get by running a Linux laptop (though possible), which is a little dissapointing for a Computer Science course. The guidance around projects can sometimes be a little thin and require asking lecturers for clarification, though in my experience, they always provide it when asked.

This is a great place to study and experience overseas life. I can approach a lot of advanced knowledge about the data science field, and I also feel pleased when studying on the lovely campus, which is nearby the sea and has a pretty road along to the church. The facilities in here are very convenient and new. I highly appreciate the dedication of the lecturers, staff, and students in supporting my student life at the University of Sunderland.
