If you are interested in the fundamentals of Computer Science, our degree allows you to develop the skills needed to solve complex problems that include analysis, design, solution choice and implementation. Mathematics is a fascinating and challenging discipline and its language and principles underpin much of the modern world. The skills gained from studying mathematics are in demand across industries including science, engineering, technology and finance. You will uncover a discipline that combines the identification and analysis of shapes and patterns with data collation and calculation. Mathematics has been taught at Aberystwyth since 1872 so that the department builds on over 140 years of teaching excellence. By studying Computer Science, students will have access to dedicated Linux, Mac OS X laboratories and central servers as well as robotic equipment including Ardvinos, mobile robots and sailing robots. Your first year will introduce you to algebra, calculus, computer infrastructure, programming and options including probability and statistics. Later in the course, you will encounter complex analysis, software engineering and agile methodologies. You will be taught by enthusiastic staff through a complementary set of teaching and learning methods and approaches, ranging from formal lectures, seminars and tutorials to practical, individual and group-based project work. You will be assigned a personal tutor throughout your degree course, who will help you with any problems or queries, whether these are academic-related or personal issues. Employability skills are the core values of our degree. As part of your degree, you will be required to take part in a residential weekend where you and other students will have work in teams to solve problems. This activity will encourage and improve your skills in communication, analysis, time management, independent and group-based working, organisation, implementation, research and technical skills. Industrial Year students can join a second-year residential weekend concentrating on skills to help you find a great placement. These include: CV skills, interview technique practice, networking with employers and developing your online presence. The skills acquired from this course are sought after by employers in computer science-related industries.
