Our professionally accredited Civil Engineering BEng Honours degree equips you with core engineering knowledge and a wide range of practical skills for a career in this vital sector.

Course overview

This professionally accredited, three-year degree will equip you with the broad-ranging engineering knowledge needed to design, create, and connect the world around us.

This design-intensive programme has a practical focus and, from day one, you'll have the opportunity to carry out hands-on work in our specialist facilities.

You'll gain real-world experience of designing innovative and sustainable solutions to help society address global challenges such as climate change, population growth and resource scarcity.

You'll emerge as a well-rounded engineer, with knowledge and skills across all five civil engineering disciplines – infrastructure, modelling and informatics, environmental systems, human and management systems, and surveying.

Professional accreditation

This degree is professionally accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), which is made up of the following four professional bodies:

  • Institution of Civil Engineers
  • Institution of Structural Engineers
  • Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation
  • Institute of Highway Engineers

The JBM works with universities to ensure their degree programmes develop professional engineers who will continue to provide a global contribution to sustainable, economic growth and ethical standards.

Work placement

This civil engineering degree is also available with a year's work placement, as a four-year programme.

You'll apply to spend 9 to 12 months working in any organisation in the world, and receive University support from our dedicated team to secure your dream placement. Work placements take place in Stage 3.

You'll gain first-hand experience of working in the sector, putting your learning into practice and developing your professional expertise.

Placements are subject to availability.

Your future

When you graduate from this programme, you'll be highly employable with a diverse and transferable skill set, alongside the very specialist skills needed to succeed as a civil or structural engineer.

ABB including Mathematics. Two Highers at the required grade (in different subjects to those offered at Advanced Higher) may replace a third Advanced Higher. Scottish qualifications can be taken in more than one sitting.

In a relevant area of engineering or physical science. At least 15 credits should be in mathematics at Distinction (including differential and integral calculus). Other units should include analytical engineering sciences (e.g. mechanical or electrical science/principles, physics, chemistry, materials science, electronics).

We welcome applications from students offering an Extended Project and value the skills of research and independent learning that it is designed to develop. If you offer an Extended Project, it will be taken into account as part of your application profile, but we will not usually include it in offer conditions for this degree programme.
