This foundation course is designed for candidates who have not studied the required subjects for first-year entry, have missed entrance requirements due to adverse circumstances or sporting commitments, or are mature students or care leavers returning to education.Taught in-house by university and specialist Foundation staff, the course offers full access to Loughborough University’s facilities, including the Students’ Union, clubs, societies, and sports services.Students progress through a blend of lectures, seminars, labs, tutorials, and optional field trips. Modules include Chemistry and a selection from Applicable Mathematics, Physics, Geography, Sport Science, Economics, Biology, Business, Materials with Engineering Science, and Programming with Electronics or Design.Successful completion enables progression to the first year of any degree offered by the Department of Chemistry, provided progression criteria are met.

Loughborough University boasts excellent academic and student support staff with a well funded chemistry department on top of its renown as the best place for sports studies. The campus feels very safe with regular security patrols and good maintenance. While the modern halls such as Robert Bakewell are of excellent quality and situated perfectly for a five to ten minute walk to most facilities, many older accommodation blocks have poor soundproofing and lack amenities such as sockets for electric razors/toothbrushes. Consider hall applications accordingly. As far as free time activities go, the university hosts several good societies (fans of tabletop games of any sort will be very happy here), but the students union is mediocre and the cost of living crisis has hit the campus shops hard. Alcohol-free vegetarianism is recommended for the best fiscal experience.

Great sense of community and amazing faculties, good gyms too. Could be improved by giving students more opportunities to experience other courses they are interested in, same way people can try tasters of societies and sports clubs.

I think the university support in chemistry is incredible. Everyone is super kind and supportive. The location has easy connections to birmingham however there is not much in Loughborough itself. The uni is spacious and green

I love the campus community and being able to walk everywhere. I also enjoy the atmosphere during sports events. One thing I think they should improve on is how many placements and job opportunities they offer for different courses, as it feels like they focus on engineering.

Chemistry with a Foundation Year - BSc (Hons)

The campus is Loughborough’s best feature for sure, very convenient to get around and has lots of greenery to enjoy particularly in the summer months, it’s a great place to live. Individual departments have their strengths and weaknesses but the school of science is very strong for its area and has amazing lab and study facilities, as well as very supportive academics and technicians. Wider university facilities are a bit more limited because higher level sport is always prioritised so lesser sports or societies can sometimes miss out. Some halls are also outdated and common rooms need more to them. The student support can be really good for one off sessions like well-being advisors or careers support, but for more long term help the waiting lists are so long and don’t give enough variety of support for these services to be useful. Overall it’s a great place, and there is loads to get involved with as a student and a stunning campus to enjoy, just some minor areas that can be a bit annoying but overall enjoying my 5th year here :)
