Sussex is a great place, it's positioned inside the South Downs, so there's a national park three feet from my room and I like to be able to go wondering. However the important thing about any uni is the pubs and we have two great ones on campus, they offer open mic nights and cheap drinks on tuesday's, not to say the pints are expensive normally. The academic staff in the Physics department are some of the nicest people I've ever met and they spend all their time on campus actively engaging and helping us. I love it.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Library is AWESOME, huge and well divided, seperated into group study rooms, silent ares, quiet areas and sofas/talking areas along with computer blocks of about 50 per floor its just brilliant. Then the cafe's of about twelve are great, the co-op on campus gives 10% off with an NUS card and the canteen with a resteraunt above makes a nice place to eat if you can't be bothered to cook.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Student advice centre, along with everywhere else on campus is geared towards helping with anything from emotional breakdowns to a cracked nail. The place is full of caring people and they organise weekly meetings for anyone that feels they need it.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
Not my favourite but they do spend a lot of time keeping the pubs happy and generally make the place habitable. Spend a lot of time bogged down in the politics but I guess that's why they get into it so I don't mind too much.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
It's Brighton, if you haven't been and don't know, it's full of live music, good food, nice pubs and tonnes of clubs.
Even if you don't go to Sussex, you need to see Brighton at least once.
Also there's a beach.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There are loads and they all keep members up to date with emails or texts depending, whatever you like, there's a soc for that.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
With the uni's online survice for work, showing us all our slides from lectures, recordings and worksheets/assessments the contact between you and the lecturer's is amazing. All academic staff are friendly and will hapilly invite you to their rooms to help you if needed.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
They hold too many meetings, presentations, fairs and soiree's with employers I can't count them. We get emails about visits to subject specific venues and the uni runs visits over the holidays to CERN and a summer school for American students which earns you £2000 for 6 weeks and gets you towards a teaching career if that's your thing. Along with the outreach program in the Physics department, there are places for everyone.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
There's such a range of accomodation you can't fault it, if you don't care about it at all then there's Eastslope and if you want an en-suite and more space than you know how to use, there's Northfield.
