The BSc (Hons) Zoo Management Top Up degree programme has been designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to enter the vast zoological collections industry.
What you will learn
Areas relating to the husbandry of captive animals, economic factors affecting the sustainability of the industry and environmental change are incorporated. A review of the recent advances associated with collections management as well as the role of zoo visitors in terms of visitor experiences, conservation education and their importance to sustaining a business will be brought to the forefront of this degree. It also explores how species and habitats are conserved and the role collections play in modern day conservation principles.
Making use of the on campus facilities, University Centre Askham Bryan has access to its own licensed and BIAZA accredited wildlife park, ‘Askham Bryan Wildlife and Conservation Park’. With this resource on site, students have access to a fully working collection, accessing the resources can have the ability to get involved with the park during your study.
Progression
Students studying the course may enter a wide variety of roles in the industry as a zoo keeper, scientific researcher, wildlife manager, lecturer, animal trainer, technical advisor or working on the field of conservation education.
Many students may progress further onto a Masters, PhD or other professional body courses.
Assessment
Assessments will be designed to give students the opportunity of performing tasks that they would be asked to do in employment.
There are a range of assessment methods used, including reports, case studies, presentations, Viva -Voce, continual assessments and exams. Typically each module involves two assessments.
Work Experience
There is no requirement for students to undertake work experience as part of the Top Up degree.
However, we would always encourage students to continue their professional development with undertaking experience in their own time.
