This programme is eligible for funding under the UK Ministry of Defence Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) scheme – our ELCAS number is 1682 Fully mapped to the United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) Graduate Strength and Conditioning Coach (GSCC) professional standard and endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMPSA) this programme has been specifically designed to address the educational needs of Armed Forces PTIs and will educate you for both in-service and civilian applications. The discipline of strength and conditioning requires you to be both an effective coach and a knowledgeable sport scientist. Therefore, on this programme, we will develop your understanding of the concepts, theories, and techniques which underpin effective strength and conditioning practice. Furthermore, building upon your current skills, knowledge, and experience you will develop your practical coaching, research, and critical thinking abilities. At the end of the course you will have gained a well rounded and in depth knowledge and skillset that will greatly aid you in your career. Areas of study will include physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, nutrition, research skills and data analysis, programme design, sports injury and rehabilitation, topical issues in strength and conditioning and the application of strength and conditioning in tactical populations.
This module will cover the basics of structured exercise training and physiological testing/monitoring for a range of sports. You’ll study how the body is affected by exposure to extreme environments (including heat, cold, altitude, space etc) and training/performing within them. The differences between different populations will also be discussed.
You’ll analyse the key concepts and dominant models of practice within applied sport and performance psychology as well as explore the philosophical, theoretical, and methodological approaches informing the discipline. Gain the requisite knowledge required for effective service delivery within applied sport and performance psychology, when working with teams and young performers.
This module will look at the theoretical underpinnings of biomechanics and how the concepts of force and motion can interact to influence human performance. You’ll study the mechanical factors which impact both linear and angular movement, reviewing methods for calculating distance/displacement and subsequent kinematic parameters, before assessing.
On this module you’ll bridge the gap between key Strength and Conditioning (S&C) concepts and theories and applied training modalities. This module will develop your competence in the safe and effective coaching of the weightlifting lifts and plyometric, agility, and speed training methods.
The module is designed to provide you with an in-depth explanation of the scientific principles of sports nutrition, giving you an understanding of nutrition as it relates to sport, performance, training and recovery. You’ll study macro and micronutrient content of the diets of sports performers and what constitutes a healthy diet.
Research methods will be built around the Ministry of Defence Ethics Committee (MODREC) process to develop your understanding of how research involving human participants in defence is undertaken to nationally and internationally accepted ethical standards. You’ll also study data science concepts including data capture, management, and analysis.
The aim of this module will be to enable you to critically evaluate sports performance requirements and develop the abilities needed to plan, deliver and monitor evidence-based training programmes designed to optimise specific physiological and performance outcomes at predetermined time points.
This module is designed to introduce you to key concepts, theories and techniques which underpin effective sports injury rehabilitation. You’ll gain a critical understanding of the sports injury process, functional movement screening and exercise rehabilitation of common sporting injuries.
The aim of this module is to develop a broad and critical understanding of the wider areas of knowledge and current research that may have a direct impact on health, wellbeing and athletic performance and consequently also Strength and Conditioning (S&C) practice.
The aim of this module is to develop your abilities to evaluate critically military and emergency services physical training practices and make suitable, evidence-based recommendations by which to optimise the physical preparedness of the tactical athlete.
The research dissertation is a military specific research project based upon the Ministry of Defence Ethics Committee (MODREC) research policy. You’ll consolidate modules previously or concomitantly studied on the programme to address a set research question and produce a dissertation – informed by secondary or empirical data.
