How will your aircraft maintenance or related trade career progress?

Depending on your work area, your career will develop as you learn new technical skills.

Your first role could be in a graduate scheme. These structured programmes let you experience different aspects of the industry before you choose an area you’d like to focus on.

Over time, you could gain experience working on various management projects with different teams. This could lead to opportunities for working in more senior roles, managing teams, gaining chartered engineering status or even becoming a consultant.

What opportunities are there for career development?

A graduate role will give you lots of practical training and experience. Many employers have training structures in place to help you develop your skills and continuously grow in your profession. Several employers will offer opportunities for gaining further qualifications in the area.

You could also work towards gaining chartered engineer status. This is awarded by the Engineering Council. As a chartered engineer, you're able to work in higher-level roles and earn a higher salary.

You can join organisations such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) or the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). These offer professional registration, career development and networking opportunities.
