How will your senior police officer career progress?

As a police officer you’ll be expected to continue training throughout your career and will benefit from structured progression routes.

The police force has a clear career pathway for ambitious officers and there are opportunities to progress for officers with good performance and exam scores. There’s also a fast-track programme to support talented police officers looking to progress more quickly. With time you could move up to senior ranks including detective or inspector.

Self-employment isn’t an option in the police, but you might consider independent private work in security after your time in the force.

What opportunities are there for career development?

During the course of your career, you might choose to train and move into specialist units like child protection, fraud squad or traffic.

Alternatively, you could move into related areas within the Civil Service like immigration or revenue and customs, as well as positions in Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS).

Structured training courses and peer mentorship will form a large part of your development as an officer.
