How will your solicitor career progress?

When you qualify as a solicitor, it’s likely your first job will be as an assistant within a legal firm. You’ll then take on more responsibility, gain more legal and business development skills and usually be promoted to senior, and then associate.

You might be promoted to the head of a department, which brings more responsibility for finances and staff management.

Depending on your experience, you could become a partner of a firm, where you’d also be expected to support and develop the business.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Once qualified, you’ll need continual professional development to stay up to date with changes in the law and to broaden your skills. This will include further training, attending conferences and mentoring. Large firms might offer this in-house and other companies may offer to pay your fees.

You could join The Law Society for access to more professional development, as well as to make contacts within the industry.
