You’ll usually begin your telecommunications engineer role as an apprentice, increasing your broadcasting and telecommunications knowledge. There may then be opportunities to do an advanced apprenticeship in a specific area like radio networks or a more specialist role like network cable installer.
As your career progresses, you could move into a team management role or another area of the industry like network design. If you work for a larger company there may be opportunities to work on more prestigious projects, increasing your project management skills.
Career development can depend on achieving incorporated or chartered engineering status through the Engineering Council. These are internationally recognised qualifications and could open up overseas opportunities.
You could also become self-employed with your own installation and repair business.
