How will your IT director career progress?

Your career might start in an entry-level or junior support role, such as an IT engineer assistant. You’ll learn lots on the job, but you’ll need several years of experience before you can become a director. Larger companies are more likely to have structured training and progression routes.

With enough experience, you might decide to work as a contractor where you’ll work for different companies as a consultant.

What opportunities are there for career development?

If you work for a large organisation, your employer might give you training opportunities where you’ll develop your skills in different software and management. You can also take accredited training courses through IT organisations like Microsoft or Cisco.

Professional organisations you could join include the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Chartered Institute for IT (BCS), where you can work towards becoming a Chartered IT Professional.
