How will your counsellor career progress?

Once qualified, your career progression as a counsellor can vary depending on the sector or therapy type that you choose.

Many counselling roles are on a voluntary or part-time basis, but paid employment is on the rise across the sector. Counsellors generally don’t get promotions, but with experience, you’ll be able to choose from a wider pool of employers. You might choose to explore different therapy styles or go into teaching.

It’s common for experienced counsellors to work in a self-employed capacity, independently offering their services to their clients.

What opportunities are there for career development?

Larger organisations usually offer internal training that focuses on building specialist skills and knowledge around a particular type of client or therapeutic issue.

Completing accredited training through a professional institution such as the BACP, NCS or UKCP is essential to working as a qualified counsellor. These bodies offer counsellors a wide range of training and learning opportunities to help you develop, and you can join their professional register to verify your experience.
