Your early years as an environmental health professional will usually be as an officer or adviser in a certain area, like environmental pollution or housing standards, while you build experience. Government bodies and councils have clear promotion routes to positions as senior advisers, consultants, supervisors or managers.
Self-employment isn’t common, but experienced consultants could take on flexible contract work or freelance projects.
If you’re in England, Wales or Northern Ireland registering with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) as a qualified practitioner is a great way to prove your experience and increase your employability.
If you’re certified with CIEH you’ll also need to complete a set amount of continuing professional development (CPD) each year. This could include going to training courses, talks or conferences. CIEH can help you access this training.
