The University of the West of Scotland has a Students’ Union that is run by elected student officers on sabbatical, with other part-time volunteer execs. Each of the campuses in Scotland have SU facilities, which include support desks where students can seek advice and guidance on any issues pertaining to their studies. The union also has representation in London.
The SU is there to help students who require representation, ensuring that all students are treated fairly by the university and have an equal voice. The SU also organises various events and activities throughout the year, helping to entertain students but also provide them with access to networking opportunities for future employment.
Students can take advantage of the SU’s own facilities including social areas, bars and cafes. These spaces provide everything a student could need during their time on campus and offer a place to meet like-minded others for studying or socialising.
UWS students enjoy free gym access to the university-run gym facilities at the Scottish campuses.
The University of the West of Scotland students on Whatuni say:
“Great union offering free gym and cheap drinks/food.”
“The union has a good atmosphere, good service and a friendly approach.”
“I love my SU, with lots of new activities every week.”
The university runs a number of clubs and societies for its students. These range from course-related groups to encourage further interaction with peers, such as the Midwifery and Chemical Engineering groups, to more hobby-based clubs.
These cover a wide range of topics, with students able to form their own clubs if they have sufficient members to start one. Sports clubs are also available with Team UWS giving students the chance to compete against other universities if they are successful in making a team.
Wednesday afternoons are usually kept free from all lectures and seminars to ensure that all students have the time to take part in sporting and club-based activities. The Students’ Union ensures that clubs and societies are adequately promoted so that students can easily find something to suit their interests.
Each of the campuses that make up UWS offers a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere with access to essential amenities close by.
The Paisley campus is right in the heart of Paisley itself, a few minutes’ walk from the train station and only a short drive from the centre of Glasgow, giving students a wealth of choice when it comes to entertainment venues and places to eat and shop.
Ayr campus, on a riverside setting close to the train station and Ayr town centre is within easy reach of a wide range of amenities, and under an hour’s travel by road or rail from the centre of Glasgow.
Lanarkshire campus is within easy reach of Glasgow by road and a short bus trip from the centre of Hamilton. They offer a good choice for places for students to socialise in the nearby town or in the city, including student-friendly bars for nights out.
Dumfries is a smaller town but it still has everything students could need, including good venues to relax for an affordable night with friends. The campus is a great place to learn in a less bustling atmosphere.
The London campus is located in London Docklands, 2 minutes’ walk from East India DLR and therefore gives students the opportunity to sample everything that the English capital has to offer.
The University of the West of Scotland students on Whatuni say:
“Close to train station and many options for food.”
“It’s good for transport and local events.”
