The University of Sussex is a word-leading leading research (REF 2014) intensive university located near the bustling seaside town of Brighton.
There are more than 500 undergraduate and postgraduate courses to choose from at the University of Sussex. They provide a rounded approach to university life and encourage students to explore and develop outside of their studies as well. Students can read about some of the inspiring things that their Sussex students have achieved including campaigning for equality and becoming a world champion powerlifter.
Sustainability is high on the agenda at this university, with its campaign called Go Greener, which is working towards the university reducing its carbon emissions by 45%, by 2020.
96% of undergraduates found a job or were undertaking further studies six months after graduating (from the most recent Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey, 2017). It also received a silver rating from the Teaching Excellence Framework in 2017.
The university’s Careers and Employability Advisers are available to students throughout their time there and for up to three years after graduating. There are also workshops for students to attend to develop their skills. Many courses have professional placements or internships available to give students experience in the workplace before leaving university.

All of the courses are structured around the latest research conducted by the university.
Undergraduate and postgraduate courses are available in a wide variety of subjects and they are all designed to give students the knowledge and skills to succeed in the working world. Students can build on their undergraduate course by applying to go on a placement or to study abroad, and this will lengthen their time of study beyond the usual three years.
The university’s Masters courses enable students to take their studies to the next level and develop their career. While the University of Sussex PhD degrees offer many students the opportunity to take part in the university’s world-leading research.

Students joining the University of Sussex will automatically become a member of the Students’ Union. The Students’ Union represents students’ views to the university staff and is run by elected members from the student body as well as 2,000 volunteers. There’s a lot of fun to be had within the Students’ Union, as it organises a host of events throughout the year, provides opportunities through clubs and societies, and runs facilities such as the Union bars and shop.

The University of Sussex has accommodation both on and off campus, so students can choose which option they’d prefer. On campus, there are nine different choices which are all self-catered. Some housing has en-suite rooms available, whereas others have shared bathroom facilities, which reduces the rent amount. Prices are between £95 and £167.50 per week depending on the housing option chosen.
For Students wanting to live off-site for a more city centre experience, there are some university owned options within the city of Brighton. Again, all are self-catered.
There’s also the option of renting privately. The university can provide students with help regarding their tenancy agreement etc.

The University of Sussex has a world-class library providing all the resources students need. It contains 800,000 books and eBooks, as well as 40,000 online journals. There’s WIFI available throughout and different study areas are available (including quiet or group ones) for students to choose from.
The university has invested heavily in specialist research facilities, such as the Sussex Humanities Lab, the £10 million Future Technologies Labs and the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts.
On campus there are 11 bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from, and a weekly market, supermarket, Post Office, launderette, bank, dentist and a health centre, as well as two sporting facilities.

Being located just nine minutes from Brighton, students can access the city life quickly and easily when taking a break from studying. This beautiful seaside city is full of cafes and bars and has a stunning beachfront to enjoy all year round. There’s a great selection of independent stores and cafes to be found in the alleyways of The Laines, and students will find a buzzing nightlife in the city too.
Not only is there Brighton city centre, but London is only an hour away by train. However, if it all gets too busy, the South Downs National Park is next to the university campus and provides beautiful opportunities to get away from it all and enjoy the outdoors.

There are 230 clubs and societies to choose from, so students are bound to find something that fits with their interests. There’s the Board Games Society, Dance Society, Equestrian and Polo, International Cuisine Society and Rewilding Sussex, to name but a few.

Students are provided with academic support from course tutors, and the university has an online system called Study Direct, which students can use to access their timetables and lecture notes as well as other learning resources.
The Student Life Centre is a place for students to receive any support that they need around welfare issues, such as study or money. The drop-in desk operates there from 9am-5pm every weekday.
There are workshops available for people who don’t have English as their first language. The university also provides support for students with a disability, that are dealing with mental health issues, or that have other learning needs.
In order to help students feel safe on campus there are security cameras and officers on site at all times.

The University of Sussex offer a range of Scholarships and Bursaries to undergraduates, including:
Article 26 Scholarship
This scholarship is offered to an asylum seeker or those with a temporary form of leave. It offers the full tuition fee waiver and £11,500 maintenance loan for each year of study.
Dr John Birch Music Scholarship
There are four awards of £800 each to support talented musicians that are open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students, regardless of whether they are actually studying music. Participation in musical life on campus is a requirement and all applicants must audition.
EU Excellence Scholarship
This award, worth £2,000 (paid in two £1,000 instalments), is for EU-domiciled students and rewards excellence.

The University of Sussex is a research-intensive university and 75% of research undertaken here has been described as world-leading or internationally excellent (Research Excellence Framework 2014). The university also boasts three Nobel Prize winners and 12 Fellows of the British Academy.
