The Students’ Union (SU) is made up of students that are elected representatives and consist of a President and Vice President, as well as Course Reps, School Officers, Campus Officers and Liberation Officers – who represent specific groups of people within the student body. The job of the SU is to ensure the smooth running of the university and to represent students’ views and opinions to help improve the overall learning experience.
The SU also oversees the social events that happen on campus – students will find the opportunity to attend or take part in a huge range of activities and events ranging from comedy to club nights, special interest groups to sports clubs. The Students’ Union co-ordinates and supports the great range of social clubs and student societies that are available for students to join. For those who want to start their own group, the Union is available to support every step of the way.
University of Suffolk students on Whatuni say:
“They’re amazing and arrange the best events and activities.”
“The students union is a great setup and is always there to support any students who are in need of it.”
“The SU has just opened a new lounge area combined with a shop, which is proving very popular with students. The SU is a very good source of information and help.”
The University of Suffolk offers a number of societies that range from subject-related to hobby-led, including the Games Society, Midwifery Society and the Dance Society. There are also lots of sports clubs to get involved with, ranging from football to badminton, as well as sports classes such as pilates and volleyball.
Students are also fully supported if they want to start their own society, which in turn shows initiative and leadership skills which can be added to their CV.
Clubs and societies are a fantastic way for students to make new friends, pick up new hobbies or interests, develop existing personal or professional skills, or make their mark on the student community. Students will be assisted in finding the perfect society or club for them from the day they arrive at the university, with a fresher’s fair showcasing all of the fantastic groups operating each year.
University of Suffolk students on Whatuni say:
“The clubs and societies are endless, they really have put a massive effort into making sure everyone can take part in one.”
“Our SU at the University is fantastic with a lot of activities, sports and clubs to join around campus. There is a wide range of things to do and there’s always something to do for everyone. We have plenty of freshers events which is great, and also lots of great spots for students to hang out and study, thankfully to the SU.”
“There are many societies and the sports scene is very good.”
Studying in Suffolk offers something for all students, with countryside, beaches and beautiful scenery, as well as plenty of bars, cafes and pubs to explore in the evening.
If students want the hustle and bustle of city life without the expense, they will love the convenience and location of Ipswich, the county town of Suffolk. This flourishing town is the destination of choice for those seeking the best in entertainment, architecture and the arts, whilst retaining a hint of its peaceful, Dickensian charm.
Just ten minutes away from the main campus, students can go along to Cardinal Park, which has a cinema and restaurants on site, as well as a nightclub that hosts regular student events.
The main university is just a 20-minute walk from the train station, making it easy to explore the county. Towns and villages near Ipswich include Woodbridge, Newmarket and Framlingham, which offer independent shops and cafes to relax in. What's more, students are just over an hour’s train ride away from London.

“The city life is good with lots of different places to shop and eat, plenty of stuff to see and for students who like a night out, plenty of places to go for a night out that are also reasonably priced!”
