The University of Salford Students' Union (USSU) is an independent organisation run by five student-elected sabbatical officers who work full time. There are also a group of student reps who work on a voluntary basis to represent the views of the Salford community, offering academic support in its advice centre.
The SU organises events, advice and activities for all students to enjoy. It’s also the home of Atmosphere, the Union’s restaurant and bar, and runs three shops on campus, selling low-cost groceries and supplies.
A range of sports teams and societies are based at the Students’ Union, providing an exciting yearly timetable of activities, with everything from archery to ultimate frisbee. The Union also has its own radio station, Shock Radio, and online newspaper, the Salfordian.
University of Salford students on Whatuni say:
“SU is good, would like to know more of what they do”
“Good student union.”
“USSU offers more societies than MMU.”
The Students' Union offers a wide range of clubs and societies for students to join. There is a range of options, including the Wildlife Society, which organises trips and volunteering opportunities across the UK, and Salford Greenpower, which brings together student engineers, project managers, marketers, graphic designers, journalists and photographers to make, build, race and promote an electric car project.
Sports clubs range from men’s and women’s football and rugby to kickboxing and mountaineering. Shock Radio and The Salfordian newspaper are student-led and recruit new members every year, enabling enterprising students to produce, write, and present their own content for the Salford community.
Students can also create new clubs and societies if they are not already established.
University of Salford students on Whatuni say:
“There are many different sports from all around the world.”
“There appears to be a good selection of societies and sports.”
“A great variety of sports/societies, and all advertised well.”
Manchester city centre is just a 20-minute walk away from campus. Famous for its sport, music, culture, nightlife and shopping, the city provides a rich landscape of opportunities for adventurous students to explore during their time at university. There are plenty of bars, galleries, museums, clubs and music venues to discover, as well as many independent boutiques and historic markets.
Clean and safe public transport links make it easy to get around the city, and with a train station located right on campus, it’s also quick and easy to explore the rest of the UK. Leeds, Liverpool and London are only a short journey away. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Manchester is highly popular with its student reviewers.
University of Salford students on Whatuni say:
“The university is in a good location. It's about a 25 minute walk from the centre of Manchester.”
“Very close to all of its halls of residence.”
“The uni is placed right next to the train station as well as numerous bus stops.”
