Hull University Union is a charity run for students by students. Students automatically become a member when they enrol with the University of Hull.
The Students Union supports a wide range of full time roles that students are able to be elected to. These include a President, and Vice Presidents for Education, Activities, Inclusivity and Diversity, and Sport.
The union aims to help students during their time at the university — organising events and activities, supporting student needs and most important of all, making sure students have a great time. Students particularly praise the events in their reviews. For example, there isn’t just Freshers’ Week at Hull, there’s a two-week WelcomeFest to really help students settle in.
The students’ union offers more than 140 sports and societies for students to get involved in. There are all the ones students might expect like football, cricket and netball, plus loads more like archery, lacrosse, dodgeball, go-karting and Ultimate Frisbee.
It’s also home to a variety of food and drink venues, and for nightlife there’s the £3.6 million Asylum nightclub which has hosted performances from Tom Odell, Chase & Status, Professor Green and much more.
The students’ union has received multiple awards in recent years, including winning a gold award from the Students’ Union Evaluation Initiative.
University of Hull students on Whatuni say:
“There is plenty of facilities and representatives at the union, with an open door policy, they always help were they can.”
“They offer a wide range of things and activities. Alongside this the union contains entertainment spaces, book shops and loads of food places. Whenever we have a lecture break most people head there.”
“Great union, offer a wide range of facilities and services.”
“The student union is very focused on representing the students’ opinions and pushing them forward into making changes. The facilities are wonderful as well.”
The university’s students’ union offers more than 140 sports teams and societies for students to get involved in. A brand new Allam Sports Centre complete with 120 fitness stations in the gym, 12-court sports hall, world-class squash facilities, and a floodlit pitch and pitch-side changing rooms means students are able to work out in style and comfort.
When it comes to societies, the university caters for almost everything – from big bands to board games, breakdancing to battle re-enactment. And if a student’s particular ‘thing’ isn’t represented by an existing society, no worries – students can be supported to start up their own. There couldn’t be a better or easier way to make new friends with similar interests or get involved in something completely new.
Student reviewers applaud the range of societies on offer, and particularly praise how much they do around campus.
University of Hull students on Whatuni say:
“Fantastic variety - lots of engaged sports societies and several other non-sports societies with lots of events.”
“We have tonnes and they cater for everyone. Also if you don’t feel catered for you can start your own.”
A former UK city of culture in 2017, Hull offers students annual festivals for film, comedy, jazz, photography, science, literature and music, and big-name events such as Freedom Festival, Humber Street Sesh and Pride – one the biggest free Pride events in the country. Hull is full of life and colour – and it’s celebrated for it.
The cobbled streets of the atmospheric Old Town have been used in period dramas, while the burgeoning Fruit Market district is fast becoming a vibrant cultural quarter, of boutique markets, live music, art exhibitions and more. Visitors flock to The Deep, the Marina and the Museum Quarter. Closer to the university, the Victorian villas of the Avenues area nestle alongside a plethora of bars, coffee shops and boutiques.
Live music can be enjoyed at Fruit, Welly and the Adelphi, while the city’s theatres – including the renowned Hull Truck – attract nationwide tours of musicals, plays and comedians. There’s also the city’s new £36 million Bonus Arena which seats 3,500 people and attracts some of the UK’s biggest stars, whilst sports fans can choose between Hull City, two Super League rugby teams, and ice hockey at Hull Arena.
Outside of the city lies the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Wolds to the sandy beaches of the East Coast, so there’s plenty of places to explore.
University of Hull students on Whatuni say:
“Absolutely, there is everything you need within walking distance of the university. I chose to live further away however the university does offer housing very close to the university.”
“Excellent, the accommodation is on campus and it’s just outside of the city centre with really good transport links and there are supermarkets that are short walk away.”
